Kubuntu Fiesty Fawn does not start

Let me tell you all that I am absolutely new to Linux and thus do not understand the terms normally taken for granted by all you experts, so I request the help in layman language.

I installed Kubuntu and ran it for few days. Recently I discovered software installer, and went through the list and chose quite a few. It started the download and installation and finally said all the installations failed. Since then I am unable to login.

If I supply wrong password it tells me so but on giving correct one it accepts the same but within few seconds I get same login screen back. I tried failsafe login, but with same results. I tried terminal(??) whereby i could login but did not know what to do after that.

Probably helping me will be a frustrating job but it will be really appreciated.

For starters, I'd advise you to straighten the seemingly erroneous update(s). To do so, log in to the console ("terminal"), issue the following command and post the system's feedback (as available - silence means success):

    Code:
    sudo dpkg --configure --pending
    --

The term sudo used by unicornrider is the instruction to go to the higher level. You will then be prompted for your password (the same as your user password). Type in your password, and the action you have requested will be done, unless you get an error message. If you do, please post it here.

        Can you then login?

Re: Kubuntu Fiesty Fawn does not start

            Friends,

I booted in console mode executed the command given by Unicornrider (along with sudo and all) it started working. Lot of setup setup setup update dpwnload showed up and finally $prompt appeared.

Since I do not know how to go back to normal (Graphical) login screen from console mode. I rebooted and tried loging in without success. Went to console mode agains and tried the command, this time total silence.

            Now what should I do?

Re: Kubuntu Fiesty Fawn does not start

Try starting in recovery mode which you choose from the boot manager at the start. In recovery mode you are automatically sudo. When you get a prompt, type startx to start KDE. Does it work? If not, it may well be a problem with xorg, the graphical server. In that case type

              dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Select all defaults. Then type startx. Are you now working? If so reboot as you don't really want to be running a graphical session as sudo

                - to be repeated until "all is said and done", read: silence is the only feedback.

With this done, reconfiguring the X server as recommended above should do.

Even after a dozen attempts I was not able to install
Kubuntu 7.04 from the live CD.Every time it throwsup some
new error the most common being "The KDE process died unexpectedly".
I tried memory test and everything else suggested by my friends.
The maximum I could go is up to the stage "Select Your Language".
But it did not show any list of languages at all I waited for half an hour, but when the cd rom was not showing any flickering light for about 35 minutes,
I threw up my hands.I made 4 more attempts after that but without
                  success.Should I install "Ubuntu 5.1" and then "Kubuntu 7.04" ?
Windows XP Professional is already there on my machine. How partitioning is to be done ?
C20 GB) No O/S but my data files only

Re: Kubuntu Fiesty Fawn does not start

You may have more luck with the alternate cd. This provides for an installation in text mode straight from booting. The reference to KDE would suggest you computer is having some difficulty with the installation in graphical mode.
