Kubuntu Install-Want to image a different HD

So I have a computer which has 2 160GB HDs. On one I am running Win XP Prof. I was using the other drive as a data drive. I can get Kubuntu to boot just fine. When I install it recognizes both drives (one is a Maxtor one is a seagate). The Seagate is running XP and I want the Maxtor to run Kubuntu. When I try to run the partition software (through the installation process) it tells me there was an error and it could not create a partition. Originally the Maxtor & the Seagate are NTFS formatted. The issue is now I cannot see the drive any longer in XP. That makes sense to me since I just tried to partition it to a non windows system. I have two questions:

    1. How do I get Kubuntu to install on the Maxtor HD.
    2. If I cannot get it to install how do I reformat the HD so that windows recognizes it again.

I am a complete newbie to Kubuntu and Linux. I tried to look through the forum and couldn't find the specific answer. Please let me know if you need more specific (as I suspect you will). Thanks!
