Hmmm ... with the apm[d] package installed?

It's installed, but not running. This is a desktop, not a laptop. I tried to start the apmd service, but it would not start.

I had the same problems. Fixed it by installing the 1280x1024@76Hz monitor driver instead of the one generated by the xorg reconfiguration tool.
