    Grub and External HD

    Hi,

I want to install Kubuntu onto an external HD which is connected through a PCMCIA USB adaptor.

Is it possible? Should I install grub onto the external or internal HD?
Will grub be able to recognize the PCMCIA card?

    Please help.

My short answer to your question is, I don’t know.
In my experience studying these things, anything can happen in your case – it may or may not work, and in the latter case, you may be able to fix it or not.

Here’s two cases you can look at:

Another issue arises when the PC has a mixture of IDE and SATA hard drives – that, too, is a crap shoot, and may even depend on hardware issues (like whether/how IDE controllers are working).

FWIW, Here’s my How-To on basic GRUB principles and methods for most basic cases:

(If nothing else, you can learn how to put GRUB where you want it, at will, and you can use that skill in your experimenting to get your system to go.)

You hope that GRUB can be set up to handle this automatically for you, and maybe you can. A second possibility is that each time you boot up your PC, POST goes on, and then you must enter BIOS setup and select the drive to boot from (yes, each time). I've seen both cases prevail at various times.

Perhaps others may have newer or better advice or information for you.
