    downgrading???!

    Mornin'!

A friend has a laptop almost identical to mine, and it was really struggling with windows 98 :-X so I installed kubuntu 7 on it.
Unfortunately there area few problems, mostly to do with the display. I tried reconfiguring X (can't remember quite how now) but it stays the same. Basically it seems to be at a really low colour depth, and it's just a bit 'lumpy' (We're really technical here!) as there is only 64mb in there (same as mine but mine is OK).

On mine, which is the same laptop but slightly slower, there aren't any of these problems. The only difference between the two is that I installed version 6 of Kubuntu on my laptop and version 7 on theirs, so presumably, if I downgrade their computer, it'll be fine and dandy.

is it possible to downgrade to version 6 without wiing all their settings?

    Re: downgrading!

I don't know easy way to downgrade - You need lot of work to change packages to earlier versions and then you need to reconfigure settings.

    About reconfiguring X.
    How to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (look (1)) :

You can run in the konsole:
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    More:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
    http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p7.html

Or you can edit xorg.conf with text editor:
Press alt + F2 and type: kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf

A friend has a laptop almost identical to mine
If they are identical - > you could copy xorg.conf from your computer to the other computer. (If you try this - look (1) )

    Note
I'm using same xorg.conf in the feisty (kubuntu 7.04) and dapper (kubuntu 6.06). I simply copied xorg from feisty to the dapper. Feisty regonizes my display automatically (right settings in the xorg.conf), dapper doesn't.

    (1) Before you edit xorg.conf:

      Re: downgrading!

      Hi,

      Thanks. When I said I'd reconfigured X I meant I'd done the "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" thing.

I think it goes deeper than just the xorg.conf file. I think maybe the newer version had slightly higher tech requirements all round.

Oh well, It sounds like it's probably best to archive his bits and pieces and re-install.
