Display settings on boot out of monitor range

Hi, I'm sure this is an easy one.

I have the 64bit kubuntu CD and a E6300 cpu and 6800GT gfx

When booting from the CD it had the same problem, the loading splash is fine, but then instead of going to desktop, my CRT monitor says it out of range then switches off and my LCD (on DVI) just has some diagonal lines.

Off the CD, I was able to change from "VGA" to 1280x1024 or 1024x768, can't recall which one. Then I had both monitors working, but the mouse pointer was not visible on my CRT.

So I think I just need to tell it to boot up with a supported resolution?

    My monitors are a 19" compaq S920 and a 19" WS LCD at 1440x900

    Thanks.

    Check these:

You can also try CTRL-ALT-"-" (that's the minus key on the number pad). This changes the resolution that X is currently using to the next in sequence. See if you can at least get to a resolution that will work, and then you can go to System Settings to "tweak" it.

Thanks, I'll give them a look. I had just found out about ctrl+alt+ (+/-) and gave it ago, but misread it and missed the alt!

Thanks, I got it in. ctrl+alt+(+/-) just make the pattern change on the LCD, still out of range on the CRT.

What I was able to do was add "VGA=792" to the command line grub uses to boot and that did the trick. Unfortunately since this was the first time I'd seen the login screen, I'd forgotten what user and password I'd installed with.

Still got no mouse pointer on my main monitor, a stretched image on the ws and stuck in clone, but now I'm in I can play. Got as far as the official nVidia drivers telling me they were couldn't compile because something was missing, thought it said "libc", but there are many packages with libc in their name. Needed to boot back to XP to watch TV so I left it for the night.
