If you go to the http://www.getautomatix.com/apt/dists/. You will notice that there are:

It would be good idea to upgrade kubuntu first. Third party packages after successful kubuntu upgrade.

so, if there a way of getting it to upgrade kubuntu only, without the 3rd party things?

Comment out / disable unwanted repositories.

You could:
Edit /etc/apt/sources.list with text editor (backup first).
Example:

# this line is uncommented
deb http://archive.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/....
#this line is commented out.
# deb http://www.getautomatix.com/apt/dists/kubuntu...

or

Managing Repositories

to disable a repository:

1.

Start Adept by choosing KMenu->System->Adept Manager Manage Packages from the Desktop menu system.
2.

Select Adept->Manage Repositories in the Adept package manager window.
3.

Find the unwanted repository , right click the line, and select Disable.
4.

Click Apply to save your changes, and then exit using Close.
