    Kernel 2.6.20-16-386 & nvidia driver

I have installed my nvidia driver with this command

    Code:
    sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel-common
Now I ran my Adept Manager to install all my upgrades.

I rebooted to boot in the new kernel and I couldn't start X.

In my Xorg.0.log is this error
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module!

So now i know that my nvidia kernel module doesn't work and i have to recompile it.

When i try to install it again with aptitude it says that it is allready installed.
When i try to remove it, it also wants to remove my kernel 2.6.20-15. This is also something that I don't want to do because in that kernel everything works fine.

Could anyone tell me how I can reinstall my nvidia driver on this new kernel?

i assume you have the "restricted" section enabled in your repositories.
    then, have a go with:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new
since it conflicts with nvidia-glx, you should be able to get this newer driver and have the old one removed automatically

            oops, sorry...sorry.
            i see...so you're running -16...
            i haven't upgraded yet.
i think i read some other threads reporting issues with the new kernel...
            here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=456702
you must have bumped into one of those.
sorry i had you waste time...
i think your best bet is:
            a) have a go with the open source "nv" driver
            b) go through the above thread (someone had a solution)
            c) stay with the older kernel
            sorry again.
            cheers

The upgrade doesn't work on my pc at work. On my home pc I also have nvidia drivers and the upgrade workt perfectly.

              Can anybody explain that then?

Re: Kernel 2.6.20-16-386 & nvidia driver

                I just won't boot in kernel 2.6.20-16.

He wont install the right restricted-kernel-module with my nvidia driver.

If i am in kernel 2.6.20.16 then he still takes the restricted-kernel-module-2.6.20-15

I can't fix this so I'm gonna stay with 2.6.20-15.

If anyone has a solution pls post it here?
