    how to upgrade from edgy to feisty?

    Hi, I was wondering if someone could point me toward a guid for upgrading from Kubuntu Edgy to Feisty?
    I've seen lots of guides that use update-manager, but I'm having trouble dl-ing this package through apt. Whenever I try, it gives me the following error message:
    Code:
    jacob@jacob-laptop:~/Desktop$ sudo apt-get install update-manager
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
    requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
    distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
    or been moved out of Incoming.

    Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
    the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
    that package should be filed.
    The following information may help to resolve the situation:

    The following packages have unmet dependencies:
     update-manager: Depends: python-gnupginterface but it is not installable
             Depends: unattended-upgrades but it is not installable
             Depends: python-gconf but it is not installable
    E: Broken packages
    I've been having some other difficulties with apt, though, which may be related. Whenever I run apt-get update, I get the following erroneous output:
    Code:
    jacob@jacob-laptop:~/Desktop$ sudo apt-get update
    Password:
    Sorry, try again.

    I think you need to change your sources.list file so that it corresponds to feisty repositories. At least, that'd be a good place to start. You could give this a go

      There's no official way to do this for Kubuntu?
      When I did an update from Adept earlier, it asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the next version of Kubuntu. It seemed to pull some stuff off of the internet and put it in /tmp, then told me it would run the updater utility, but at that point it seemed to die.
      Any suggestions?

        Run the adept_updater again. It should offer you the same choice again.

        If something went wrong and everything is messed, do as molloollom told you. Get a nice feisty source.list and then do

        Code:
        $ sudo apt-get update
        $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
        $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a
        Until no error is left. Then reboot.

        BTW, making a copy of your home dir can be very handful, just in case.

        Javier.

              Re: how to upgrade from edgy to feisty?

              Try to reinstall it.

              There should be an apt dir in both /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages and /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages.

              Also check that the default version of pyhton in your system is at least 2.4:

              Code:
              $ python --version

                Re: how to upgrade from edgy to feisty?

                Thanks for the reply. I think we've isolated the problem, and now the only thing that remains is to determine how to fix it.
                In /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ contains a directory called apt/ but /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/ does not. I think I compiled python2.5 from source, rather than getting it through apt. Things seem to be a bit screwy for that reason... For example, /usr/local/bin/ contains python2.5 stuff, and a python executable which I believe points to python2.5; however, /usr/bin/ contains python2.4 stuff (obtained through apt), and a linked file which points directly to the python2.4 executable in /usr/bin/. Because /usr/local/bin/ comes first in my PATH, I think it finds the python2.5 executable first.

                I think the best bet might be to simply uninstall python2.5. But the python source package does not seem to have an option for "make uninstall". I guess I could just remove the python executable in /usr/local/bin/, but that seems like a fairly ugly solution...

                Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can remove python2.5?
                Let me know. Thanks.

                  Have you tried to make /usr/bin/python a simlink to /usr/bin/python2.4?

                    Re: how to upgrade from edgy to feisty?

                    In the future when installing something essential like that from source, try using checkinstall to create a deb package. Then you can install and remove the package using dpkg or apt-get. Their page has a good writeup about it.
                    http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/
                    Not that it helps you much right now.
                    Good luck fixing it though, hope it works out for you!
