    Laptop Installation Problems

I've searched the forums for answers to my problem for the past several days, with no luck. Thank you all so much for bearing with me and reading this!

I bought a new laptop from Compaq around February this year, believing that I could remove Vista (came with the laptop, I had no choice in the matter) and install Linux. I've been using ArkLinux for the past two years (newer distro, KDE) and really wanted to find a great Linux distro for my new laptop. After much reading and researching, I decided that Kubuntu was the way I wanted to swing and I quickly downloaded the iso.

After burning the image, I boot from the CD and then select "Start or Install Kubuntu" from the main screen. Next, a series of text lines end by mostly [OK] scroll across the screen until the screen changes into a purplish blackish image that slowly changes its colours between purple and black. Then nothing happens. I've waited awhile and the screen doesn't change. The CD drive does not make any sounds while this screen is showing. Each time I try to install, this occurs, and then I have to force a power cycle and try again. Windows Vista still boots if I choose to boot from the Hard Disk.

I am trying to TOTALLY REMOVE Vista and run only Kubuntu.

If you have any help whatsoever I would be most appreciative! I am really excited that I have the chance to use such a stable and supported version of Linux and cannot wait to begin.

The information on my laptop (what I can find from within Vista anyway):
    Manufacturer: HP
    Model: Presario V6000
    Processor: AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MK-36 2.00 GHz
    Memory (RAM): 958 MB

I am trying to install the 64-bit version of Feisty.

Thank you so much for your time!

    Re: Laptop Installation Problems

I would try the alternate install CD. It installs the same stuff, just has a more reliable installer.

As for 64-bit, you might want to start with the 32-bit version and then experiment with a 64-bit installation on another partition. Running 64-bit can be a little more complicated - some drivers are 32-bit only, flashplayer is 32-bit only which affects Firefox, java, etc. There are often workarounds but if you're new to Kubuntu I would start with 32. Since you're setting up the hard drive from scratch you may want to consider a layout like described below, so you can later install 64-bit on another partition...
