    unusable space

When I first installed Feisty on my laptop (dual boot with XP), I created a root partition and then the rest of the free space was marked "unusable". After messing around and trying it 3 or 4 times, it finally worked and allowed me to proceed to make a swap and home partition. I don't know why it considered the space unusable and I don't know why it eventually worked.

Now my daughter has had the same problem on a different computer but it will not get past the "unusable" designation. I have also read one account of the same problem by another poster here on kubuntu forums (that user received no help here) http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3083162.0

So why does the partition manager mark the space unusable and what can I do about it? Since I know of three separate instances of this problem, I suspect it may be pretty common.

    Re: unusable space

How many partitions do you have?

You can only can have 4 real partitions, you'll need to make extended partitions after that.

      Re: unusable space

I don't know what cause of the problem is apart from what javier already mentioned. You can only have 4 primary partitions on a HD. If that is the case you will have to change at least one to an extended partition. Just don't change your win partition (probably hda1 or C)!! Windows does not like that at all!!
For more info on partitioning and a usefull tool have a look here:

      I hope that helps
