    LiveCD works, install doesn't

I boot from the livecd and everything goes flawlessly. I clicked on install and everything installed flawlessly. I got to the "reboot" screen after installation and tried to reboot, but it will not. I just get the black screen of death.

So, I turned the computer off and back on. Grub loads and I get a black screen with white choices. I load the top choice which says "ubuntu kernal 2.8.20 (I think) generic"

Then I just get the black screen of death again. I have reinstalled, but the same thing. Any ideas?

On your "black screen of death", is there a blinking white cursor (underscore character) in the upper left corner?

Hmmmm -- well, just for fun, after staring at that black screen for a minute or two, try Alt-F1, and if nothing happens, try Ctrl-Alt-F1. Possibly one of these will produce a text login prompt. :P

OK alt-f1 gave me the login and I am now running Kubuntu. What next? Do I have to do this everytime? IS there a better grub screen?

OK, congratulations! -- you have a complete, functional installation of a high-performance Kubuntu 7.04 system, lacking only a suitable xserver, which provides your GUI. Woulda been nicer if it did that for you, huh? :P

After logging in at the text prompt, type
            Code:
            sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
This will initiate the xserver configuration script. On the very first screen, you DO NOT want to have it autodetect (that's how it got into this problem in the first place ...). Tell it "no", and then on the second screen, choose "VESA" as the display. Continue on through the script, accepting the defaults (no need to have it autodetect your keyboard either -- tell it "no").

When you get to the monitor section, on the resolution menu, pick only the one that you want to work with for the next little while as you resolve which driver you need, i.e. if you can work at 1280x1024 or something just go with that.

Next, assuming you make it through the rest of the script, when it is done it throws you back to the command line. At this point, you can type
            Code:
            startx
and you should get a GUI that you can work with.

Now, you need to do a search in this forum or at Ubuntu Forums, giving the graphics chip that is in your computer, and find out what others have shared, regarding setting up the driver for that particular chip. Ubuntu and Kubuntu driver setups are the same (well, approximately) for the same version.

No, once the video display system is correctly configured, you will boot straight to the GUI, but the autotecting part of the installation routine is not able to handle 100% of the video hardware in the world -- I have the impression it handles maybe 75% of it, and the rest of us have to fiddle it into compliance. I'm going to be offline for the next couple of hours (Miller Time in Ohio ...).

              Re: LiveCD works, install doesn't

When I pressed alt-f1 it didn't give me the text prompt to log in, it gave me the GUI screen to log in.

                ?

                Well, that's a weird one --- I don't think I've ever heard of it!

Something is clearly not quite right in your xserver configuration, which is defined in a file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I still recommend you do a search on your graphics chip, and see if there have been other problems and solutions. A minor edit of your xorg.conf file might fix it so you don't have that extra step in the boot sequence. :P

"Yes" (it's weird) and "no" (the X server is not the culprit ...).

For reasons mysterious to me, the X server's output seems to be winding up in the wrong "virtual terminal", i.e. number one instead of seven (as per Kubuntu default) ... Er. by the way: what does "no. 7" actually show?

Therefore, the K Display Manager's settings (to be found in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc et al.) are were I would start searching, e.g. by comparing them to the CD version (which should be different in some way ...).

The funny thing is, I rebooted and now I get the GUI log on screen every time.
