    Kubuntu Studio?

I'm a KDE junkie and prepared to admit it (esp with the beautiful looking KDE 4.0 on the horizon), but I mainly use my box for 3d and video work so now Ubuntu Studio has me looking longingly at the other side of the fence.

I'm wondering if it's possible to get the speed improvements on audio / video apps while still keeping KDE by just installing the low latency kernel via apt in my Kubuntu Feisty install? If this is possible, which package (for a 386 machine) would be the correct one (there's about 3 marked low latency).

    Thanks!

    Re: Kubuntu Studio?

I'm running the Ubuntu 64-bit low-latency kernel, as a separate bootable OS from my 32-bit Kubuntu. I've been doing some amateur audio work, capturing old recordings from records with Audacity, cleaning them up with Gnome Wave Cleaner, etc. I don't think the low-latency kernel produces any faster throughput, nor does the 64-bit OS run 32-bit apps any faster. You're mostly stuck with the processing speed of your CPU as the limiting factor for throughput time. The low-latency kernel merely reduces the interrupt-response service time of YOUR CPU, as compared to the generic kernel, in order to reduce the lag in audio processing. But it all still runs at the same CPU clock rate.

I'm installing Ubuntu Studio desktop on my Kubuntu set up right now.

Using the instructions here. Hey it may not work.. I dunno. I guess I"m feeling brave.

Bongo, did Ubuntu Studio (or the audio parts of it) install? I tried it about a week ago and ran into a "dependency hell" problem that ended with a "it will not be installed" error.

It installed but won't load the desktop...

oh well. I'm going to but US on a different HDD. I'm really not a fan of gnome at all... but that's because what little I know I learned in KDE I guess.

I wonder if we can put the KDE desktop on the US install?

Here are pretty pictures -- I see he installed it on a VMWare "machine". Anybody got success with real hardware?

                Re: Kubuntu Studio?

                Hmmm...

Just installed in on one of our machines here. Pretty login. Fast desktop response. A couple of nifty bits and pieces (restricted driver manager etc) but I can't help but feel that gnome makes it feel a bit clunkier and more cluttered than kde. The desktop itself is nice, but many of the programs (Evolution, system tools etc) rely on long menu's of not-always-clear text options instead of KDE's clearer icon and description equivalents (Kmail, system settings).

Network Manager also gave me some (easily fixed) troubles with power management / suspend that I never got with Knetwork manager. Then again I was getting the odd fglrx hang on kubuntu that doesn't seem to happen on studio.

*sigh* KDE4 can't come soon enough.

@bongo: What do you mean by I
t installed but won't load the desktop...
Did you install on your kubuntu?

Does that mean your kde desktop won't load?

If so then I'll wait for a Kubuntu version. I simply don't like gnome, fullstop.

                  Cheers

Hey Fintan, sorry for the very slow response.

Kubuntu wasn't affected but Ubuntu Studio simply wouldn't load. It would get past KDM and then just hang... oh well. You can choose KDM in the UbunSt set up. I've since removed all the packages. And I'm HOPING to get this thing installed on another HDD today.

Does this mean I've missed the blindingly obvious?

Can you really just use the normal Ubuntu Studio install disk and choose KDM to get your low latency, kernel wrapped up with everyone's favourite () desktop / window manager?

Oh how I wish it were so Kubuntiac...

The only solution I've found that actually works is to put it on a diff HDD.

I mean it's easy enough to install all of the software on your Ku... but I really wanted a complete solution. Where from install everything is optimized.

I might be in the minority but just trying to get around in gnome makes me sweat.. I'm fairly new to linux and KDE is all I know at all.. and that only barely.

I'm thinking of giving Studio64 a try this weekend. I also much prefer not to use Jack..

Thanks for trying it and sharing your results Bongo. I've been using Ubuntu Feisty 64-bit low-latency to do my audio work, and Kubuntu 32-bit generic for everything else, but I was looking at Ubuntu Studio with some fascination. It sounds like I'd better stay with what is working.

I think I may have it...

Hey this seems to have worked for me (at least my PC hasn't *yet* melted down in a fiery ball of molten circuitry)

                            I just:
                            1. installed the standard Ubuntu Studio (from the .iso)
                            2. installed linux-lowlatency*, linux-restricted-modules-lowlatency, kubuntu-desktop
                            3. Chose kdm from the debconf window that pops up asking what default window manager you want
                            4. Chose session type as KDE from the login menu (first time only, it remembers after that)

Now I actually seem to have everything working perfectly with a nice, low latency kernel and KDE (including goodies such as the restricted driver manager, which worked perfectly for my ATI drivers).

*sigh* It's so good to be back after trying my hand at gnome. T'was not a pleasant experience. In fact I think I'll go and take a shower... I feel so unclean...

                            [EDIT:] Seems that:
                            Ubuntu Studio + KDE 3.5.6= , but
                            Ubuntu Studio + KDE 3.5.7=

After grub the loader gets to "Loading /scripts/init-bottom" and just freezes.
Serves me right for making gnome jokes really!

*It didn't install the lowlatency kernel by default for me, most likely because I didn't ask for any of the audio plugins/apps in the Ubuntu Studio install. If you asked for these my guess is that this will be installed already.

                              Re: Kubuntu Studio?

All the ubuntu studio features are great, but what really caught my attention is the very pretty overall desktop theme which makes everything just look so much better.
I've also installed ubuntustudio from kubuntu feisty with no luck. I've only installed the ubuntustudio-look part, so nothing changed, I didn't even find some reference to being able to select it as a new theme or something like that.

The look-and-feel of Studio reminds me of something...I think it's that glimpse of Vista I saw the other day. I really don't even keep track of windows anymore and only see it at friends and at work (at work I don't really spend time looking at my OS, too busy ).

So if anyone knows how to get the whole desktop look of Studio, please do tell. I suppose Gutsy Gibbon will look much better anyway, and perhaps a Kubuntu Studio will appear sometime.
