    Can't run desktop CD

I just downloaded feisty and burned it to a cd. When I start up, I get the kubuntu logo, and then the screen goes black for a couple minutes and then I get this:

bcm43xx Error: microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed

I know feisty can run on this hardware. I have it installed on an external hard drive (upgraded from edgy).

    Any ideas?

Try reinstalling feisty, and if that doesnt work install edgy and upgrade like you said you have done before.

I don't have feisty on this hard drive, its on an external hard drive (so I can't reinstall it). Why would installing edgy and upgrading to feisty work when a fresh install doesnt?

You said you have done it before, and I dont think being on an external harddrive would make a difference. also, Its not like you have very many other options :P

No, I understand that will work, I have done it before, I just don't understand why upgrading would support more hardware than a fresh install.

Ok, I installed edgy, upgraded to feisty, and restarted... then I got the same errors I got before.

Can you give us an idea of your hardware
(This is why I went back to Debian...... anytime you take a snapshot of sid and "work the bugs out" its questionable. just my 2 cents)

                Yeah:

                Dell 6400 Laptop
                Intel Core Duo processor
                ATI mobility 1400
                broadcom ethernet card

I did get feisty up and running, finally. I had to install a patch from mylittleubuntuguide.org. That script also installed beryl, which I didn't want... feisty really should be fixed so people don't have to download a patch just to install (the live cd doesn't even work because of it). The problems are the graphics card and the broadcom card, I don't know exactly why, some sort of driver conflict I think.
