    Install problems

I'm trying to install kubuntu 7.04 on a dell optiplex g110 with 128mb of ram, 733mhz, 10gb hd.... it seemed to go through most of the install, now i'm looking at a blank blue-white scrn, the cd is still accessing by the sounds and I could see the mouse pointer for a while, the pointer is gone and the cd has been accessing for a while with no result.

Should I try the alternate cd instead of the desktop? Any suggestions? New user to linux, so anything would help. Thanks.

    Re: Install problems

I had a similar problem with my dell notebook (with similar specs): I could not load ubuntu; I could load xubuntu, but clicking on any application seemed like it caused the system to hang. So I installed the alternate cd (server edition) - without choosing dns or lamp - and the icewm desktop. Worked great. So good, in fact, that I installed it on my desktop. You can get it from here:

As told, yes, to install kubuntu with 128 Mb of RAM you'll need the alternate CD.

I have it working in some 128 Mb and it's usable but slow. You can have massive speed gains, at the cost of features, using icewm as the window manager.

      See:

In my tablet, that has good memory, but a very slow (but cold and cheap) transmeta crusoe I choose icewm, thunar, xdm and firefox.

You might want to try fluxbuntu. This livecd will give you an idea of how things may work on your system. It is basically the server edition +/- some packages. It is also installable.
