    Won't startup

I was running Ubuntu Feisty until a few days ago...then I switched to Kubuntu. During the upgrade, I told it to switch over to KDM.

This worked really well for a couple of days...now the computer won't startup. I let adept upgrade packages yesterday. I boots for a while, then, mysteriously shows me the old orange Ubuntu login screen for about 3 seconds, then xserver crashes and the computer goes asleep, showing me the Kubuntu boot screen (black background with a progress bar that does nothing.)

I've tried booting in recovery mode to hopefully get some updates, thinking that some that came with Feisty yesterday is screwy, but I have no network in recovery mode.

    Any ideas?

    Re: Won't startup

There were some very scary postings about yesterday's Feisty kernel upgrade, so I haven't upgraded it -- I think I'll wait until I have a lot of time to fix it. Here's one for you:

Try this: Hit Ctrl-Alt-F7 (or another F key until you get a text login screen). Log in. Type "sudo dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and run through the configuration.

Thanks...tried that, but all the other ttys don't give me a login prompt...all I get is an underscore in the top left corner.

Any ideas how I might get my network up and running while in recovery mode?

        Thanks!

Were you trying to change ttys in recovery mode? Try booting into the regular mode and see if it works.

I'm not very familiar with recovery mode. Is this on a laptop or desktop? If you usually rely on wireless on a laptop, it's possible that plugging an ethernet cable in during boot-up will get the network going.

Maybe you can try to just type your login and password in the black sreen with prompt.
It worked for me, my system started up and all i had to do is type startx to get KDE going.
