    Time to upgrade?

    Hi

I'm an edgy user, reasonably tolerant of little bugs here and there.

Is Feisty (at Herd 5) sufficiently mature for someone like me to upgrade, as opposed to doing a separate installation? If so, would users recommend updating repositories and upgrading via adept or downloading the ISO image and doing a clean install?

    Thanks

    Re: Time to upgrade?

Hio, I'm a new user.. maybe 8 months in the Linux world.

I'm running Feisty on both of my machines now. I'm still a complete idiot when it comes to most things Linux but this OS is VERY good.

I had a couple of lock ups with Herd 4, but 5 has been behaving nicely.

Right now the only thing I can't get to work is the video at CNN.... I have no idea why... lol. But other than that I do all my work on this system.

By my estimation Feisty even in Alpha is a large step above Edgy. Speedier, better hardware support, prettier.... and if a noob like myself can feel comfortable with it then it must be fairly solid.

    Hope this helps,
    Kev

      Re: Time to upgrade?

After running Edgy since it was released (my first Linux system) I ran Feisty Herd 4 for a week with no issues, and then Herd 5 came out so I went ahead with it. But the Herd 5 Alternate CD partitioning function is pretty bad -- it couldn't see a SATA drive anywhere, and so I couldn't do a clean installation from the CD. I ended up partitioning and formatting with GParted, then re-installing Herd 4, and then using apt-get update to get the Herd 5 upgrade.

I got Beryl running today, kinda-sorta, and am gradually getting my applications set up. Herd 5 seems as stable as Edgy ever was -- better with some things like Beryl.

        Thanks for that!

I'm running a Centrino notebook. Downloading the desktop i386 iso. I assume that's the right one?

        Regards

Yes, or the alternate CD. Hopefully you plan to keep the same disk partitioning as you are using for Edgy, and no SATA drives are involved.

Up and running now. Took 2 attempts as something went wrong with X first time I think.

All seems OK except software update problems, posted elsewhere.

Getting X running is THE most annoying part of the whole get-up-and-running process. Especially when you need to work with drivers.

There seems to be a minor epidemic of sound problems with Feisty -- lots of posts over on the Ubuntu forum about it. Happily my on-board Intel STAC chip seems to be one that Feisty was expecting, so all my noisemakers are working correctly.
