Finally got this guy installed...well not really

I had to use the alt. cd because the live cd would not install grub to root. Then after getting it installed I had to run fsck 5! times. Then it told me it had no access to /Home/userxy.

After a few reboots and fscks later I got it opening up in kde albeit with a few error messages concerning the main panel, only to find out I couldn't configure the clock and a few other things like the taskbar were missing and not placable on the main panel.

Apart from that fiesty looks fast and lean. Now all I need for the mom. is a taskbar and find out how to configure the clock.

    Hi,

It's really strange that you had to run so many times, are you sure your disk is ok ?

Yes, I checked it before installation. What happened is that after the first check it booted fine. Then at the next boot I had to do it again, etc. Finally fsck removed a few kmc (or other kde stuff) things like taskbar etc.

Anyway, the last update/upgrade also got rid of the other problems, except the adept update notifier, which is still missing. But that is no great loss.

Fiesty seems very fast and lean I will start playing with it more today and see what happens.

      Cheers to all

        Hi,

I don't know this behaviour is really strange and I would avoid to put important data on this drive...

        Good luck

HI Sky, yes I know what you mean and thank you. This HD is new and checked. I found after bit of playing the problem. It turned out to be the same problem I had with edgy at the beginning. The fstab and its UUID's. I don't know what they are good for, well in theory yes but...

I thought they were being replaced by something better in feisty. maybe latter.

Here is a copy of my edited fstab :
          # /etc/fstab: static file system information.

I hope this helps anyone with a similar problem.

Happy to see it's not a hardware trouble... Anyway strange behaviour just because of this uuid system, never saw this, but it's true I preferred the old way (it was more understandable for human) but this new one seems to be much more efficient for the grub system, which will not fail if adding a disk or moving them...

            Cheers

Re: Finally got this guy installed...well not really

Atfer a while I had to do a fsck again after every boot. So i tired something else. I installed ubuntu herd4, which by the way also worked fine from the live CD, in contrast to the kubuntu version.

I have been runnung this for three days now and no fsck. Wierd. I don't see why this should be a kubuntu specific problem. Any way I am now going to install kde-desktop.

I guess if the front door doesn't work, use the back door.

              Cheers

                Hi,

I guess you're right to use this way... I would do the same if possible, but it's really strange behaviour...

                Good luck

Re: Finally got this guy installed...well not really

I agree it is strange. I have now been using kubuntu-desktopfor a few days and regurly rebott, shut down and boot, etc just to see if it still wants fsck. Same HD, same partition.
I even treid a few hard kills (turning off the paower switch while still running) a few times. At boot it did a file check and just started up again. I wouldn't suggest doing that unless you really have to, but I wanted to be sure. So up until now I am a happy sailor. Feisty is fast and snappy.

I don't know what the problem was with the kubuntu herd install but there deffinately is one.

                  Can't wait for more
