audio problems with NVIDIA NF6100-405 chipset

I eventually managed to install Kubuntu Feisty Herd2 amd64 version from the alternate CD and have a working system (I am writing this on it) but have no sound. The loudspeaker icon has a big red dot on it with a white cross, and pointing the mouse on it shows "Mixer cannot be found". I believe I installed everything related to sound, but no success.

Initially lspci revealed many unrecognized devices all with "NIVIDIA" in its name, but after installing everything NVIDIA and (in particular?) the kernel 2.6.20-5-lowlatency and restricted modules, everything appears to be recognized and working find, including NVIDIA graphics with glx driver.

Audio is also properly recognized as lspci -v outputs:

00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
Subsystem: ASRock Incorporation Unknown device 0862
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
    Memory at dfff8000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2
    Capabilities: [50] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask+ 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
    Capabilities: [6c] HyperTransport: MSI Mapping

    yet there is no sound.

Since installations failed with Kubuntu Feisty Herd2 Live desktop i386, Kubuntu Edgy Desktop i386, Knoppix 5.1.1 (using kernel 2.6.19), I suspect the chipset and/or motherboard is too new to be fully supported? (motherboard is Asrock K8NF6G-VSTA with 512MB and Sempron64-2800)

Any suggestions for what to check or install?

The audio problems are solved by upgrading to the new kernel 2.6.20-6.11. i tested both versions 2.6.20-6-generic and 2.6.20-6-lowlatency and both are ok.

Graphics with the proprietary nvidia driver is also doing well; e.g. Beryl is running smoothly. Nice low power (for both electricity consumption and computing power) mb and cpu.

Hey, this is going to be a stupid question no doubt, but I'm a newish user.

How did you upgrade to the 2.6.20.611 kernel?

I'm asking because I have a AM2NF6G-VSTA motherboard. I installed Herd 4 but ran into a number of issues trying to use Adept.

If I knew how to do the kernel that might solve a number of issues.

Even if you could direct me to a thread where I could learn how that would be great.
      Thanks,
      Kev

Hmm, I am a bit puzzled why this is a question at all, but let me try to help:

Since I am not a friend of the command line, and also had and have problems with adept, I prefer "synaptic" to install packages. If it isn't installed yet (it is not in a fresh install) do this:

On the command line type : sudo apt-get install synaptic

It might offer you more installs that you had asked for, but if you don't know how to get rid of the rest, answer yes and install all of it. It is highly unlikely that it will do any harm.

Once installed click the K-menu button, and find Synaptic under System. Start it.

Click the search button and enter: linux-image

Synaptic will show all available kernel images. Select the meta package "linux-image-generic" to get the latest 32bit kernel. Once a new kernel becomes available the choice of this kernel will result in an automatic update. (My recommendation: if you are a newbie then stay away from the 64bit kernels; it is a lot of hazzle if you want more multimedia than the bare necessities!)

          Hi Ullix,

You told me a lot there that I didn't know! Thanks.

I'm going to give this a try and if I need more help I'll ask.

          Thanks,
          Kev

OK I put Feisty on and apt-get'd Synaptic which did all the updates without error, and gave me the 2.20.9 kernel. Sweet!!

It's running GREAT. Fast! I love it.

            Thanks for your help!

I have the same configuration as you and i also had trouble in finding the better kubuntu distribution.
Now i use feisty herd 5 for i386.
I've downloaded from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/re...feisty/herd-5/ the torrent file for feisty-alternate-i386.iso and it worked perfect for me.
              I have also installed beryl.
