please don't hate me for asking about fglrx

i have the RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE] which is no longer supported by ati. It works fine with the free driver but my screen res gets capped at 1024x768 whereas i want it at 1280x1024. Is there a solution? I stopped doing all this diy linux stuff for so long I've forgotten and it's now rather confusing. I've turned back into a noob. I used to compile my own rpms and help others!

    feeling stupid. much appreciated.

it occurs to me that both my monitor and the hardware support the 1280x1024, but xrandr won't list it as an option. Can I just fix that ?

Okay, the answer is "yes!", you can figure this out on your own.
      1. open terminal
      2. sudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf
      3. add "1280x1024" to the list
      4. restart computer (or perhaps just X)
      5. open terminal
      6. xrandr
      7. xrandr -s [whatever number is the 1280x1024 from step 4]

My guess is that if you want other options that the free driver doesn't give, you'll need to go to:

my appreciation to anybody who helps me and others.

Contrats on figuring the issue out by yourself. Always satisfying. 8)
