Installing An Older Nvidia Graphics Card - Black Screen.

My computer is 5 or 6 years old as is the graphics card that came with it. A friend gave me a newer card that will fit my machine. It is an Nvidia card (not sure of the specs) and is an older model card from the same generation as my computer. A good match. The card is "new" to me but is itself several years old.

So, I installed the new card and booted up Kubuntu. I saw the "Kubuntu" graphic as the machine was booting up but then the screen went black. Nothing happened after that. I waited for a while but the screen never showed any graphics. Just black.

My questions is this, do I need to install the graphics drivers for this (or any) graphics card before I install the new card? If the answer is "yes" then please explain how this is done.

    Thank you.
