a bit of a brain teaser.. (dvd drive issue)

hello all. have a bit of a seriously irritating problem. i cannot get my dvd drive up and running on my asus f3sv-a1 running feisty. so, long story short, it cannot be intialized via gui. the error comes back Return code from mount was 32.
"mount failure" when trying to enable it in admin mode in filesystems and disk area. also, in /media the icon is a folder and accessing it pulls up nothing even even when a cd is inserted. it is also not the hardware, works perfectly fine on the windows side. the path is /media/cdrom0 and also the other is /dev/hda. lastly, in k3b when i open it, it says there is no hardware. does anyone know how i can get this up and running please in very detailed step by step way? please help, i would like to get up to 7.10 someday soon but need my burner to make a cd. thank you all.

That looks like a problem, if you're sure the /dev/hda is referring to your CD/DVD drive. That's the designation for the first IDE/PATA drive on your system. :P

Can you open your /etc/fstab file with kate and post the contents? Just open your Konsole window, enter
        Code:
        kate /etc/fstab
and copy it and paste it into a reply here.

Re: a bit of a brain teaser.. (dvd drive issue)

                    Mike, couple of thoughts.

                    1. That /etc/fstab line just looks very odd for a CD/DVD device. Did the installer do that automatically? In other words, was that drive in your system at the time you installed Kubuntu, and that's how it chose to write the fstab file, or did you add that drive later? Here's what my fstab line looks like, which is fairly typical for CD/DVD drives:

                    Code:
                    /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0 0
Since your drive is non-functional, and the /media/cdrom0 mount point apparently already exists, you might try pasting my fstab line over the line your fstab file and rebooting -- I don't think there's much to lose.

                    2. Under the KMenu>System menu is the Kinfocenter. Open that and see if it shows a CD ROM drive. Mine is the first item on the list. If so, open it and see if it seems to have valid information. Mine has a list of 20 parameters that I would paste in, but they don't seem to "copy". It starts "drive name sr0" and proceeds down a list of capabilities like "Can close tray" and "Can read multisession", etc. with "YES" or "No" indications for each.

So, I'm thinking that if Kinfocenter shows the hardware, then that means it's just the /etc/fstab issue that is keeping it from working.

That's all I can think of to help :P

Re: a bit of a brain teaser.. (dvd drive issue)

                      And as is mine:
                      /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
And, yes, the entry in Mike's fstab "can't" be correct (yes??). hd device designations are for Hard Drives, and CD/DVDs are SCSI devices. (dibl - correct me if I'm wrong on that)
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

That is indeed the traditional *nix nomenclature style. I hesitate to declare it an absolute rule today, due to the recent introduction of UUIDs and conversion of ALL hard disk drives to /dev/sdx in post-Edgy *buntu. But, I wouldn't think /dev/hda would be correct in any case, if there are hard drives in the system -- it would have to be more like /dev/hdc or something after the hard drive letters. :P

Well, that would be a symptom of "hardware works OK, but OS installer is setting up the software wrong", I think.

Is it the CD/DVD drive IDE or SATA?

I haven't been able to determine if the dvd drive for that system is ide or sata. I'm assuming ide.

It doesn't look like the hardware is being recognized at all so the problem shouldn't be a mount or fstab issue.

I'm finding some discussion of thinkpad problems with the ich6 controller hub that seem to relate to your problem, but you are running an ich8 hub and I haven't found indications that the situation would be the same for ich8.

I do see a post in the ubuntu forums for asus f3sv in which one person added piix to their /etc/modules file and anther added ide_generic to theirs. This is probably your best lead but I'm not sure of all the ramifications of those modules or how the ide drivers have evolved with recent kernels. It might be worth a try though just to see. You can remove the change if it doesn't do anything.
It would be simply a matter of opening
                              Code:
                              kdesu kate /etc/modules
and adding a line that says either
                              piix

                              or

                              ide_generic

I would try piix first. You would need to reboot after this.
If something goes wrong you can boot into recovery mode and use
                              sudo nano /etc/modules

                              to remove the line.
