I have installed Kubuntu 7.04 on a Dell 1521. With a lot of research and hours spent on the sound, I finally got it working. There is one peculiarity and I also posted this on the Audacity email list but have not gotten any response. If I start Audacity, it doesn't recognize the on-board ALSA configured sound card for output. It does see it as an option for input. System sounds come through fine and if I play something using VLC, it plays fine also. After playing anything with VLC, if I then restart Audacity, it then sees the sound card as available for output. Then I can select it and sound plays fine out of Audacity. I also have an Edirol UA-1EX which shows up for both input and output in Audacity and works fine even before playing anything through VLC. Anybody have any idea why Audacity can't use the on-board sound until it has once been used by VLC?
