Computer crashed, now sound won't work

The other night my computer just shut off on me. I'm not sure if it just randomly crashed, and shut off, or if I bumped the power button with my knee (wouldn't be the first time).

Anyway, ever since then, I've got no sound. The first thing I checked was that the analog/digital switch wasn't turned on, and i've triple checked that since then. I uninstalled and re-installed alsa-base. Neither the onboard sound, or my soundblaster card work. I've checked all the obvious speaker connection, and I've also hooked up my headphones to the front jack. Nothing.

Any suggestions? Just about every thread I've dug up was solved by unchecking the analog/digi switch, but that's not the case here.

Are you dual-booting? If 'yes,' does sound still work in the other OS? If you are not dual-booting, check and see if (under your user name) you still have audio in the Secondary Groups in System Settings | User Management | Users.

It may just be me but kubuntu keeps doing weird things like this to me too. You could try loading a program that lets you change your audio device like /dev/dsp1 to something else and try just changing that see if you can get some audio. It may be a weird permission problem as I have been experiencing so do a sudo to open the program. I know vlc has this option if you got that.
