Re: ATI 9200 SE and 3D graphics

You've tried envy as well so I'm not sure what else to try. I'm Sorry I couldn't be any help.

    edit:
Let's try one more thing and force bustype pci, even if you have an agp card.

Check to make sure you still have the /etc/X11/xorgbakgood.conf file we made as backup. If you have already deleted it then make another backup as I described before.

    kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Repeat the changes we made before : driver "radeon" and the dri and extensions sections. In addition in the device section(where your driver line is located) put a line

    Option "BusType" "PCI"

    Save it and restart X.

If this doesn't work recover as you did before.
I will be out of suggestions at this point but would like to know if it works or not.

Sorry for butting in like this, but could you try Envy one more time? Maybe even the updated envy_0.9.7-0ubuntu12_all.deb version. Tell it to uninstall your old ATI driver and then to reinstall it. See what that does.

I've had Envy install a corrupted Nvidia driver on my system before; I fixed it with the method above
      Asus G1S-X3:
      Intel Core2 Duo T7500, Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT, 4Gb PC2-5300, 320Gb Hitachi 7k320, Linux ( )

Re: ATI 9200 SE and 3D graphics

That's fine but since we tried cleaning out fglrx already it would be a good idea to try my bustype suggestion before trying envy again.

I will agree that sometimes multiple installation tries work.
My nvidia driver install only worked until I rebooted on the first install. I simply installed again and everything has been fine since.

          still null...........

I found this : http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=9200.0 would it be alright?

          for integr8e :
I was thinkingof using envy but to do so I have to first install flgrx files.. I found the files for envy (even though I am using fiesty) because from what I saw my video card is to old for the fiesty files- or am I wrong??

"I found this : http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=9200.0 would it be alright?"

The key difference between that and what we did was the removal of the restricted modules packages. It depends on how important it is to you to have 3d and get away from the vesa graphics drivers vs. the risk of breaking something else. If you have a wireless network, for example, it could break your wireless functionality.
If you have an agp part, rather than a pci part, you might want to simply add the xorg device section changes recommended in that post, and see what the results are, before you rip out your restricted modules packages.

I just want you to be aware that you could break something elsewhere so consider the possible tradeoff.

Whatever you decide let us know the results. Graphics are tricky because, for any specific problem, there doesn't seem to be a consistent solution that works for everyone.

cri6904 requested my help in a PM (specifically, if my script might help), replied with instructions for a clean setup and use of the script.

I'd put the whole reply here, but there's no "sent messasges" function...

Re: ATI 9200 SE and 3D graphics

at the moment I have 2 options :
                - mesa
                - fglrx

                Fglrx:

                - using envy, it says that my video card is recognized, there are ATI drivers but ATI does not support my OS /Kubuntu 7.04)
                - I saw SheeEttin fglrx automatic download/installation script (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3082777.0)
and am trying. Right now I'm stuck at a strange point. It says "You need to enable the "restricted" repository in /etc/apt/sources.list!" but from what I know it is. Here is the list (in cas it need correcting in any way please let me know) :

Re: ATI 9200 SE and 3D graphics

no. stuck on something that may seem silly, it says that when writing
                    Code:
                    (./fglrx.txt -r)
"You need to enable the "restricted" repository in /etc/apt/sources.list! in the second case it was universe"
                    Code:
                    (./fglrx.txt -m)
                    ..

tried to uninstall everything that has to do with fglrx.

                    tried radeon ... nothing.

                    if I were to :
                    Code:
                    glxinfo |grep vendor
                    I get :
                    Code:
X Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 142 (GLX)

Re: ATI 9200 SE and 3D graphics

As far as I can see your sources.list looks ok. Does anyone see a problem?

The -m switch installs the 8.40 version which, I believe, doesn't support the 9200 series. I suppose you could try it anyway, but I'm skeptical as to whether there would be any benefit to it. There is an 8.28 version which is supposed to support the 9200.

The -r switch is updating the package list, installing the restricted modules and xorg-driver-fglrx and then creating a module dependency file.

I considered whether to explain how to rewrite around the sources check or to modify the script. Since there are relatively few operations in the -r switch I'm going to simply give you the operations that are performed minus the error status echo statements. If there is an error while doing this manually you should get some feedback as to what the error is.

                      update sources list:

                      Code:
                      sudo apt-get update
                      install restricted modules:

                      Code:
                      sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r`

                      install driver:

                      Code:
                      sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx

                      write new module dependency file:

                      Code:
                      sudo depmod -a
Does anyone see anything I missed from the script or an error I made?

If you want to try installing 8.40 or 8.28 from ati maybe sheeEttin will modify the script or I guess I could if need be. Trying to explain how to do it would be error prone. An alternative since it is closely based on method 2 here:

                      http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide

would be to follow this method. However that web page shows driver 8.41 which is appropriate for the 2000 series ati cards only. We would need to change the driver number you download. At any rate have a look at that page and, if the above repository install doesn't work and you want to try it we can go into some details about where the changes would need to be.

I'm curious as to why you care so much about getting 3d functioning on an old 9200 series card?

Since you've helped me so far, I think it is right that you get an answer.

I'm a newbie in Kubuntu (as you probably can tell) and my idea is to switch from Windows to Kubuntu. I've done a lot so far to get things done such as installing an OS, printing, updating repositories, etc... and if I want to migrate totally I feel that I must be able to do these things on my own or at least with help from a forum.

It may seem like something easily avoidable by changing video card or changing PC, but I'm really intent in fixing it. I've been trying to resolve every problem possible : I've been able to hook my cellular to my PC and use it as my modem, I've worked my printer so that it prints better in Kubuntu than in its native OS.

                        that's the reason

I understand I wasn't trying to sound critical.

I just want you to know that, unless you are trying to do something like run intensive games under linux, you probably don't really need 3d support. Since you have a 9200 card, which is quite old and slow for such uses, I assumed that you probably weren't going in this direction. The vesa driver, which should be problem free for just about everyone, provides acceptable 2d support and would meet nearly all the needs of the vast majority of people running linux. I myself ran linux with nothing but the vesa driver for years and only recently bothered installing the proprietary nvidia drivers for my latest upgrade. For everyday use on a reasonably modern machine the change was largely unnoticeable.

Anyway if you go forward I will continue to try to help if I can.

It reconfigures you xorg.conf file to whatever you designate; if you want the default packaging, use "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg"; but, if you want to create a somewhat customized configuration - which is what I'd suggest doing - type "sudo dpkg-reconfigur xserver-xorg" (excluding the "-phigh"). If you use this command, just choose the default settings for anything you're uncertain of, they won't hurt a thing
