GeForce FX 5700 Ultra hang at start kdm

I have an nVidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. After installing the driver automatically, I reboot the system and it hangs at the splash screen. So, I disable the splash screen. Then it gets to "Starting K Display Manager: kdm" and stops. If I hit return I get the text mode login prompt. Essentially I'm at the second post on this forum:

Can only get it to boot to Kubuntu when I change "nvidia" to "nv" in the xorg.conf file. Do I change something else in the xorg.conf?

Hope this is clear enough to make a diagnostic!

Note: I have already tried Envy

When, in a console, you run "nvidia-settings", what driver version does it show on the "X Server Configuration" tab?

Have you tried the "noapic" and "nolapic" boot options on the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst?

Last idea -- try a "nosplash=y" boot option on that kernel line.

Still get the problem when applying changes above to xorg.conf

When I run "nvidia-settings" from command line I get the following error:

You don't have the Nvidia driver installed correctly.

If you have a GUI, try to follow this instruction to download and install the Envy script installer. It should install the correct driver, and do the complete job for you.

Post again if you run into trouble with it. But mostly it just works.

Reinstalled Kubuntu, ran Envy and rebooted. Turned off splash, and it still hung at starting kdm.

Switched to nv driver and ran nvidia-settings. Got this screen

          I'm exasperated.

            OK.

Well, I wish you had not switched back to "nv" -- that's kind of a regression from the point when you had the proprietary driver installed.

If you can get logged in at the console (text prompt), run
            Code:
            sudo envy -t
then follow the instructions to install the Envy driver. At the conclusion, it will ask if you want to start the X server, and you can say "Yes". I presume you did this before and it will hang again.

However, this time when it hangs starting kdm, use Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-F1 and get to the login prompt and login again. Now run
            Code:
            sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
and it will overwrite these settings into the new xorg.conf file.

            Now try
            Code:
            startx
and see what happens. If it hangs again, I think we need to work on the /boot/grub/menu.lst boot options before reverting to the "nv" driver, because it isn't going to provide anything better than what it just did. :P

Thank you dibl for your help! You are not going to believe this: after I followed your instructions and typed startx, I got an error stating that my power cable was not plugged into my video card. Turns out when I gutted my computer trying to disable my floppy drive, I disconnected my power cable and didn't plug it back in. What a pain in the ass.
