Abit AB9 PRO / video card advice

I'm going to put together a new system soon and wanted to check about compatibility.

The motherboard is an Abit AB9 PRO with 3 GB RAM and Pentium E2140 Dual Core 1.6 GHz CPU (getting those from a co-worker, so they are not optional ). Is anyone successfully using this board or this combination with Kubuntu (or Ubuntu)? The hard drive is going to be a SATA one, which I also have no experience with. (I saw old posts about Edgy and Feisty alpha having issues with the 965 chipset -- have those been resolved?)

I'll also need to buy a video card for this system. My current machine has an ATI X700pro and I think I'd prefer one from Nvidia which seem to cause less trouble under Linux. Price-range-wise I'm considering a GeForce 8600GTS. Are those any good or should I shell out more for a 8800GTS? (I would not mind if Oblivion worked fine -- it runs in Wine.) It should be a quiet card. Three years with a turbine (X700) are enough.
