Kpilot Not Detecting "Tungsten E2" Palm Pilot

    Hi all,

I have found a few tutorials online with palm pilot instructions, but they have all been 'similar' hardware or software, and I haven't been able to get any of them working...

My Device is a PalmOne Tungsten E2, and I really just need the calendar and 'to do list' to sync (and contacts would be nice too).

I installed this thing called 'Kpilot', but the wizard doesn't detect my devise, and I'm sort of stuck on that step.

    Can anyone help me out?

    Thanks,

    Nick

Open Adept Manager and look at jpilot
graphical app. to modify the contents of your Palm Pilot's DBs

J-Pilot is a desktop organizer application for PalmOS devices. It is meant to be an alternative to the Palm Desktop provided by Palm.

You have access to the following applications: o Datebook o Address book o ToDo list o Memos
Plug-ins are available in the jpilot-plugins package.

You need to add the module visor. Look at Notes for Releases. Follow the link how to add module visor.
Make sure you restart your computer.

        Ok, we're getting closer....

I created a file called "/etc/udev/rules.d/10-custom.rules" with the contents:

        Code:
        BUS="usb", SYSFS{product}="Palm Handheld*", KERNEL="ttyUSB*", NAME{ignore_remove}="pilot", MODE="666"

and added the line "visor" to "/etc/modules" and rebooted.

The palm pilot now 'goes through the motions' (connecting/syncing/cleaning up/etc) when Kpilot is running (it used to fail to connect before), but Kpilot still doesn't detect it.

I tried running a sync with J-Pilot (launched from the CLI) and the output on the CLI durring sync is:

        Code:
pi_bind error: /dev/pilot No such file or directory
Check your serial port and settings
        Exiting with status SYNC_ERROR_BIND
        Finished

          Try this
In Jpilot, File menu, preferences, settings tab, Under 'serial port' entered /dev/pilot

Tried your suggestion, but no change. It still gives the same error on the CLI.

Actually, If I press the physical hotsync button and while it's trying to sync, click the software hotsync button in J-Pilot, I get the error:

              J-Pilot: sync PID = 7234
J-Pilot: press the hotsync button on the cradle or "kill 7234"
Don't know if that helps or not, but i thought it worth mentioning.

Not sure what else to tell you. I have seen/helped alot of people having problems synchronizing their palms in Feisty and that link that I gave has always worked. Here is one from the other day that had problems and after he used that link he wrote a step by step what he did. Same as the link states to do.

I don't use a palm but I would think their would be some settings in jpilot that you would have to setup. Did you install all packages/plugins for jpilot ?

Ok- I didn't have the other 'recommended' packages installed. So I installed them.

Now I can sync with J-Pilot, and the output is:

                  Code:

Kpilot still doesn't detect it though and I would like to use Kontact instead of J-Pilot... isn't Kpilot required for Kontact syncing?

I got it! Apparently I was missing a package called 'KitchenSync':

                    sudo apt-get install kitchensync
Thank you to everyone who helped.

That's great you got it setup and working. I knew it had to work because it looked like from your post you added visor module right only things left was settings or didn't have all packages installed.

Rereading through this post, I get the impression that the original problem was likely the result of not using Adept Manager to get/install the initial KPilot package.

KPilot is an installable package in Adept Manager. If installed through Adept Manager, I'd almost bet that would have been all you would have needed to do. Ditto for JPilot.

Kitchensync is in available through Adept Manager too. It is described as 'under heavy development.' Given that lightnb has things working (and knows what he did to get it working), I'd suggest a test: uninstall JPilot and the Kitchensync packages. Open Adept Manager and select KPilot for installation. Test the Palm.

In package KPilot, knotes and korginizer are susggested additional packages, but not required.

No it would not worked till he added the module visor. Installing just kpilot or jpilot with all packages it would have not worked. As I stated in the post above seen alot of issues. instill they add visor it will not work.

                          Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty)
Using Breezy, Dapper, Edgy synchronizing was no problem at all, but with Feisty nothing worked. After digging through the forums I found that the needed module visor is not loaded automatically, and should be added to /etc/modules. Then to make /dev/pilot an existing device.

Reviewed the instructions for PalmDeviceSetup that the link directs you to. Clear and easily understood instructions. This should help anyone using Feisty to get their Palm to work.

I usually use apt-get on the CLI for package installations (as opposed to the GUI interfaces). Probably due to bad experiences with 'Yumex' when I was running RH/FC.
