ATI radeon HD 2600 pro - no drivers work

Have attempted to install ATI radeon HD 2600 pro for days and no good

There are no drivers for it on the AMD for linux users and the 8.40 drivers hang on boot up.

supposed to be a new release in three days - suppose have to wait till then unless anyone else has an answer to the mystery.

Yes - there should be new AMD drivers available on September 10.

It's official: ATI Radeon drivers to be open sourced

Its so nice to finally be seeing drivers for my video card coming (hd2600XT)

It must have sucked for anyone with a hd2900 to go so long without proper driver support.

AMD/ATI seem to be getting their **** together now, so hopefully ATI users should be ok for the oncoming years. I hope nvidia does the same.

I'm building a 2nd computer and I might put Kubuntu or another distro on it, too.

Could someone recommend a video card? It's primary purpose is for video encoding although I might try 3D (Beryl/Compiz) for kicks. But, I wanted to go with either an ATI 2600 or Nvidia 8600 GT. Which one do you think will be the better choice? Is it safer to trust Nvidia or do you think AMD/ATI will improve the development/performance of the ATI (open source) drivers sufficiently?

I will probably dual boot Windows XP but the current computer will be in Kubuntu 99% of the time (otherwise, Win 2K).

Being an avid nvidia fan, id say nvidia but you never know, ATI might pull an upset too. Id read some reviews and compare the two. Would you be gaming?

And if your going to encode, even a card as old as the 6 series should fair pretty well. It really matter on your CPU. Make sure you have a fairly recent one with some grunt behind it. You cant got wrong with dual cores.

8.41 will be out this Wednesday now. The Catalyst 7.9 may be delivered tomorrow, but not the Linux version.

I was planning on using the new driver pretty soon, but I wonder if waiting to hear the results would be more prudent...

It seems promising. With older hardware (9600XT):

Re: ATI radeon HD 2600 pro - no drivers work

Apparently, it only supports the R600 series, and 8.42 will support everything (more or less).
I wonder what kind of bugs I should expect...

Ah well, I'll just keep the 8.40.4 installer around.
EDIT: I'm noticing a performance increase, except in Sauerbraten, where textures are increasingly appearing black (or nonexistent). (If you care, it uses SDL.)
                      Back to 8.40.4 for me.

Still unable to boot using HD2600 pro.

after installing drivers the ati installers says everything is ok

when i boot and change the chipset in the bios to boot with pci the computer hangs
                        on the start up screen.

could be a problem with the xorg.conf file

                        Here it is:

Well - that was fun but the speed boost is only on the fgl_glxgears and glxgears. Planet Penquin racer gives less than half of the fps with the 8.41.7 (8.41 about 40 fps, earlier drivers about 100 fps) . So back to the older model drivers.

the computer hangs on the start up screen.
Is this total lock or can you use virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) ?

it is a total lock up with about 2.5 bars lit on the startup line.

                              This may help:
Question #7197 in Ubuntu: how do I remove the splash screen in 7.04
                              https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/7197

In the text mode you can see what is happening and where it stops/locks.

                              Note
                              It says:
You may switch to VT1 or VT6 when you see the splash screen by pressing
                              <Ctrl>+<F1> or <Ctrl>+<F6>
So you will see a lot of startup messages 'just in time'
BUT here it is ALT+F1 !
