What to do with new printer driver file? [Solved]

I have downloaded a printer driver file .ppd

Now where do I place it to make it work?

Stop -- you're doing it the hard way!

Open Adept, find the package "foomatic-gutenprint-db" (or something very close to that), install it, and then your printer model will be in the Gutenprint database and you can go in through Kmenu>System Settings>Printers>Add and install it the easy way.

Tried that alreasdy through searching the internet.
I don't see a file similar to that.

All I see is foomatic-gui printer configuration tool.

No need to search the Internet. In Adept (or Synaptic) you should find the package listed as "foomatic-db-gutenprint".

I tried your suggestion already too.

As I wrote, nothing turned up execept the stated exception.

            Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Unfortunately, I am away from my system and cannot confirm which repo the foomatic-db-gutenprint package is from, but I can assure you I have nothing fancier than Medibuntu in my repos.

OK, let's say you are stuck installing the downloaded and converted driver file from linuxprinting.org. Here is the thread that shows my little ordeal with it back in April -- read down the thread and eventually it tells which file and where to save it.

Thanks to getting the full name of the package I could do an apt-get install and it worked. Think I tried it early on. Perhaps the difference is I added several sources.

Sorry KDE opted to remove a few common printer drivers for resons of space to cause these problems. This has not been a user friendly or intutive experience; major mistake to remove the files; I think, better to let people post-install OpenOffice and leave it out of the download and CD images.

Now I fear for upgrading to GG - what else essential stuff will be missing?

              Thanks for your support though.

Re: What to do with new printer driver file?

                You're welcome!

I agree it was off-putting to discover no driver for my printer. I agree with you -- I would rather find no Open Office on the automatic installation than no printer available. But, when you think about it, Microsoft does not have to concern themselves with providing 100% device drivers on their installation CD, because device OEMs know they have to provide drivers for Windows with their hardware. So *buntu is operating at a bit of a disadvantage in this regard, trying to stuff the OS and all kinds of supporting stuff on a single CD.

Anyway, I guess that's the kind of thing this Forum is here to assist with.

OBTW, I installed Gutsy 64-bit over the weekend, and used the same foomatic-db-gutenprint package with success. 8)

Perhaps there should be some kind of method to download things that were left off the CD (e.g. printer drivers) right off the bat?
It'd certainly cut down on problems like these.

Good idea - could it be part of the install wizard?
