Problems after using Envy, can't set resolution.

Installed the drivers for my Nvidia Geforce 6600 gfx card, using Envy, and used Nvidia-Settings to set the resolution to 1280x1024@85Hz.

Everything works fine until reboot. The login screen seems to be in 640x480 or some lower res.
When logging in the resolution changes to 1280x1024@60Hz.
I can change back to 85Hz using Nvidia-settings, but it goes back to 60Hz after boot or logout-login.

One strange thing i noticed is that the resolution in the System settings, from the K-menu, isn't the same as the one in Nvidia-settings. When running @85Hz the original System settings panel is telling me that the monitor is set to 151Hz.

I really hope that someone can help me with this, because I promise you, I searched, tried, searched some more, tried again.
Tried to understand why it isn't working but my xorg.conf drives me nuts.

    Here's my xorg.conf

Re: Problems after using Envy, can't set resolution.

Dude, I got the same problem. I installed the new kernel and now my nvidia drive does not want to work. I used Envy as well, and I reinstall the proprietary driver but it works at the moment. Once I reboot the OS I have to change the xorg.conf file in order to get KDE working back again. Once you find the answer to your question, please let me know.

Pookito - Do you change the resolution using the Nvidia-settings or do you edit the xorg.conf manually?

OK, I'll give you one more thing to try.

          1. Backup your xorg.conf file.
          2. Open the Konsole and enter
          Code:
          sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
          3. Restart the xserver with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and see what you get.
          4. If you don't like the resolution, NOW run
          Code:
          sudo nvidia-settings
in the Konsole, and change it, and click the "Save to X Configuration File".
          5. Restart the xserver again, and maybe get happy :P

If this happens to work for you, make a note: FIRST let it re-write the xorg file, and SECOND tweak the resolution.

Still the same. Drops from 85Hz to 60Hz and keeps the correct resolution, 1280x1024.
Only way to keep the screen at 85Hz is by clicking Apply and just keep away from reboot / restart of X. >

I have been having the same problem but when i read the manual for my monitor it told me to run at 60Hz. If you don't have a manual try looking at the makers website for info, hope this helps

Re: Problems after using Envy, can't set resolution.

The monitor has been running for years at 85Hz. (Windows) And I can use 1280x1024@85Hz with no problem. But as said before, it drops to 60Hz if I reboot or restart X.
And btw, the screens flickers at 60Hz, so to run 60Hz is a big no no.

                  Heh.

60 Hz gives me a headache -- I like 85Hz too, or at least 75.

I don't know what your 6600 can do, in conjunction with your monitor. My GF 7900GS seems to prefer "auto" for the refresh rate, when I set resolution to 1600x1200. So that's where I leave it. I have the impression 85Hz is pushing it when it comes to some graphics-intensive things (like Google Earth) - I can hear the fan start up. So you may be pushing the limits of your card/monitor combo.

I don't think so. Same thing happens at lower resolution. And again, I CAN run it at 85Hz without any problem if I just apply it with nvidia-settings.

Have you tried manually creating/modifying a modeline in your xorg.conf?

I got to tell you, the easiest way to install the drivers is by using envy like the previous thread said.

Re: Problems after using Envy, can't set resolution.

I tried manual install of graphic drivers and configure the xorg.conf but always got black screen at startup. Something went wrong with the drivers I think.

The drivers installed with Envy loads (the logo at startup) and works well. (I can run the resolution I want)

The ONLY problem I got is that the monitor drops down to 85Hz at boot or restart of X.

As I understand it is the line
                          Code:
                          Option "metamodes" "1280x1024_85 +0+0; 1024x768 +0+0; 800x600 +0+0; 640x480 +0+0"
that sets the resolution. So why do I have this problem?

Here is some of the information in my Xorg.0.log. (note, I now use a lower resolution, but the same thing happens at a higher one)
                          Code:
                          (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x960_85+0+0"
This is from the end of the part where my monitor and graphics card is configured.

And at the very end of the logfile
                          Code:
                          (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x960_60"
Btw, thank you all for trying to help. I really appreciate it!

Two problems I really have to solve before I can start using the computer daily. :P

Perhaps it would help by punishing it. Like, no internet access for five days.
