I have my printer, scanner(epson DX4000) working in Kubuntu 7.04. ( Scanner with iscan 2.8.0-2) but in openoffice I can't get anything scanned sofar. Not with insert-picture-scan-request(nothing happens) neither with select source. Scanner is not listed. Sane is installed + some extra sane-packages. But no success. In windows XP Openoffice does recognise my scanner. How can I get openoffice see my scanner?

Re: scanner is not recognized in openoffice!
Here using HP 3000C (usb).
Does kooka (kooka - KDE Scan & OCR Program) work ?
Trying Open Office Writer
Add > Picture > Scan > Choose source -> Scanner window opens
Here it tries to use device v4l:/dev/video0 (video for linux, tv card) -> other (right) option is niash:libusb:001:003 (HP 3400C flatbed scanner). Before you edit, BACKUP !

Re: scanner is not recognized in openoffice!
Hmm - I did find this:
The OpenOffice.org Unofficial FAQ v0.3.1b

4.2. How do I get my scanner working under OpenOffice.org?
In Windows, this is as simple as Insert -> Graphics -> Scan; as long as you have a working scanner with TWAIN support, you're fine.
In Linux however, there is no direct scanner support. The source can't be detected, so a workaround is to scan an image via The GIMP and then import the image via Insert -> Graphics -> From File. However, if you're willing to get your hands dirty, as the root user on Linux, perform ln -s /usr/lib/libsane.so.1 /usr/local/lib/libsane.so and the scanner will start working! (What that does is that it makes a soft-link called libsane.so; if your libsane.so.1 isn't located in /usr/lib, just execute a "locate libsane" for instance to find it).

Re: scanner is not recognized in openoffice!
A couple of comments. To get the scanner recognized by OO, I have found that it will find it if you have used the scanner in some other program such as Kooka or Xsane first. If you have not used the scanner since your last boot, OO does not find it for some reason. I don't know why this happens. I have found that if you want to modify the scanned image, it's better to do it with an external program and then insert the file, instead of scanning an image directly in to OO.

Re: scanner is not recognized in openoffice!
I tried all this but to no avail. My scanner is silent. I used it first with kooka. Than tried wth OO. Nothing. And with a symlink as root also no speaking terms. I guess I have to do the workaround. Thanks anyway for the help. I enjoy Kubuntu more than I did suse.
