Kubuntu behaves strangely in Suspend and when shutting down

    - When coming back from suspend mode, mouse and/or USB hub (connected to the monitor) won't power up. I need to replug the USB cables for these devices to bring them back to life.

    - 1 out of 10 shutdowns will just leave the machine on with a black screen, after all services were terminated, but the system won't power off. Need to hit the power button to complete the task.

Anyone experienced this? Any clues? Keyboard works normally when the system is back from suspend mode.

Regarding shutting down : I have experienced the same problem. From other sites which I have seen on this topic it looks like we are not the only ones - many other people have the same issue. Experienced people think there is something wrong in KDE. Unfortunatelly I do not remember where it was where I read it, otherwise I would send you a link.

In my case installing proper NVidia graphical card drivers helped. I can now shut down without any problems.

From a colleague of mine who is an experienced Kubuntu user I have heard about other solution that worked for him and which you could also try regardless of the graphical card you have. This is how to do it :

    1. Back up your boot/grub/menu.lst file

    2. edit /boot/grub/menu.lst as a root.

    3. Find the following line which looks like this (actual values may be different in your case) :
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-16-generic root=UUID=47bc977d-5351-4f3e-9710-487ba8a9fe65 ro quiet splash

    4. Replace "ro quiet splash" with "ro vga=788" at the end.

When you boot now as well as when you shut down you should see system messages instead of graphics which probably causes this issue.

Thanks for the tip, Ivanp. I will try it as soon as I get home, I never thought the graphical indicator could be an issue.
And it's nice to hear that the shutdown problem is known by the KDE crew. But I must mention that I didn't have this problem in Dapper. They messed something in Feisty.

You are welcome. Let me (us) know if it worked.

In the meantime I have found out the place where I read about this issue. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...gs/+bug/105102

I just made the changes and need a few days to test it. Will report back if something (or nothing) happens. Crossing fingers...
