Nvidia 8800 GTS and Kubuntu 7.04 64bit problems

    Hi all,

I got a problem after buying the new video card on my system that worked correctly before.

    This is my configuration:

AMD 64 bit 3800 dual core
    2 GB RAM 800 MHz
    Asus M2N4-SLI Motherboard
Nvidia 8800 GTS (previously there was installed a Nvidia 7600 GT)
    3 SATA disk
1 USB external disk (that own the Linux OS)
    1 Samsung LCD 16:10 19"

If I try to boot with normal boot, the screen go black when he should show me the Kubuntu write above the progress scroll and I can't see anything anymore. It look like to load the OS but I'm not able to login because it's all black!
If I boot on recovery mode, I can see everything in the console, but also reconfiguring the xserver (dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg) and inserting the right value, at the normal reboot I can't see anything anyway...

But I didn't stopped here my test...
I tried the boot DVD used for installation as live DVD, and also with this the screen go black without chance to see anything.
So I tried the live CD for 32bit version and with my surprise, this worked fine...

What can I do now? I would recover my old installation with Feisty 64 bit version than reinstalling all with the 32 bit version, but I don't know what to do, someone can help me please?

    Thank in advance

Maybe some help here : http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3085112.0

After you have a VESA display working, if I were you I would download the Envy script installer from here and use that to install the new Nvidia driver.

      Ok thnx!!

This evening I'll try to bring back to VESA (I haven't thought that! ) and then to install envy hoping to solve the problem.

I'll let you know if it worked and thank you again

I solved the problem but I don't think is the right way what I choosen...

I followed your instruction and with envy I've been able to install correctly the Nvidia driver, but at the end the boot produced anyway a black screen without cursor.

Editing the grub loader file and adding as extre option vga=775, the kubuntu logo appaered during boot, and the xserver started finally! No all work really fine, but I see as refresh rate for my monitor 50 Hz instead 60 Hz. Honestly I think that is only shown a wrong value (50) for the right one (60).

I hope this could help also someone other, I appreciated your really useful help! thank again

If this is correct, then when your X server starts, you should see the green and black Nvidia splash screen. Do you see it?

If you only have the text prompt, enter
          Code:
          sudo nvidia-xconfig
This will make the Nvidia driver write over your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with the new driver information.

Also (after you have the GUI running), you can open a Konsole window and enter
          Code:
          sudo nvidia-settings
This will open the Nvidia settings panel, and on that you can set your resolution and refresh rates. When you have it the way you want it, click the "Save to X Configuration File" button, and then click "save", and it will become the default settings.

          I hope this helps!

Re: Nvidia 8800 GTS and Kubuntu 7.04 64bit problems

            Hi dibils

yes, when start the Xserver I can see the Nvidia logo correctly and I can use also the control panel installed above application->system->Nvidia settings

Here I can change the refresh rate setting it correctly, but I don't understand why there is difference between the one shown here and that showed inside the settings. Anyway isn't a true problem because now the only messy thing is the kubuntu logo during boot, but I don't care because the Xserver start correctly

P.S. sorry the option to add at grub loader was vga=771 (or 772 or 773), not 775 that doesn't exist !

              Very good!

Now, if you want to run the Compiz Fusion eye-candy, you'll have to enable glx, which is done with this command: sudo
              Code:
              nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
              Have fun!
