Extra Harddisk, only its still NTFS

I recently received an extra Hard disk from a friend, and added it to my Linux kubuntu PC (feisty Fawn). But it is still a NTFS formated disk so it will not work in Kubuntu immediately. If I look in the "system settings" --> "advanced" --> "Disk & Filesystems" he recognize an other disk but it is not in use or something..

    My question:

How to make a suitable Disk of it? (I do not really care if it will be a Partition, as long as I can use my extra gigs )
Can I somewhere Format this disk?
Ho do I boot this disk?

I am a real Kubuntu newb, so tips, suggestions and help is appreciated

    Quickest way: "man mkfs.ext3".
GUI way: "kdesu gparted". (If you don't have it, use Adept to install it.)
    For external use only.
