Only external amplifier works; HP Pavilion dv4000, ICH6, Kubuntu Feisty

Any ideas?

After considerable fiddling with Alsamixer, I got sound to work with the external amp, but the internal system speakers remain mute.

lspci shows:
Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRw (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 04).

Turning the external amplifier off in Alsamixer doesn't make the internal speakers work, though it seems like it should.

It doesn't seem to care which capture option (Line, CD, Mic,Video, Phone, Aux, Mix, Mix Mono) is selected.

Works OK with Gnome, but I'd really rather stay on the KDE desktop.

This is not probably going to work, but...

If it works under Gnome, looks like alsamixer settings should be right. After all alsa is "below" both gnome and kde.

So I'd check Kmix and the kde control panel. And maybe disable artsd.

Just some blind ideas...
