DVD/CD reader & burner combo issues

I recently installed Kubuntu om my HP Pavilion a736n. I have just one issue:

The DVD/CD reader/burner combo drive is useless as a DVD drive. I can use it as a CD-ROM, but if I put a DVD in the drive, nothing will play it. I've tried mplayer and a plug-in for XMMS, both fail to detect the DVD in the drive.

I checked, kubuntu is addressing the cd/dvd as hdc. I tried adding to the hdparm.conf telling the O/S to set dma=on for hdc, no luck with that either.

    Any ideas?

That's because playback of DVDs requires codecs that can not be included in the *ubuntu distros. To get the codecs required to play DVDs, click How to get non-free multimedia codecs

You may also need libdvdread3 installed.
