Does Kubuntu work with ATI Radeon graphic cards?

Apparently, ATI Radeon cards don't work well with Mepis. Do they work OK with Kubuntu? Is there some tweaking required? Thanks.

Yes, they work with kubuntu.

You can be required to install the proprietary driver.

It's quite strange that they don't work on Mepis, as the core of the distro is quite similar to ubuntu.
