Connecting laptops via eth0 ports

Hello, totally new user here. My friend's graphics card is playing up and I need to get into their computer to poke about remotely. I can join the eth0 ports with a CAT5 cable, and I'm trying to ssh in. I would've thought something like

ssh username@localhost

would get me in there but I get "port 22: Connection refused".
