    Problems uploading to mp3 player

I use an iRiver T30 mp3 player to play my ogg files. I have no problems accessing it via Konqueror.

It does, however, seem to take an inordinate amount of time to upload 900mb or so of music files - sometimes up to 30 minutes.

I have experimented with the device's mounting instructions in Konqueror:
Right click on 1.0G Removable media-->Mounting

I've done things like checked the boxes marked "Synchronous", "Access time updates" and "mount automatically" to see if I can speed things up.

Checking "Synchronous" slows it down considerably.

What normally happens is that, as I'm uploading, the first 200mb goes very fast (usually within 15 seconds). The next 600mb is one slow trek up the Himalayas. What was once being transferred at over 5mb/s goes down to 10kb/s occasionally.

I have upgraded the mp3 player's firmware so that it functions as a usb drive.

Does it have anything to do with this: http://www.penguin.ch/dokuwiki/doku....ab#usb_tacking?

both these will slow it down.
    you probably want the opposite.
i.e.: asynchronous and no access time updates
though the latter (in this particular case) will give you a barely noticeable advantage.

i think we can quite confidently say: no, it's got nothing to do with this.

I have also experienced this sudden slowdown on copying things to or from a memory card of a mobile phone. 200MB sometimes takes an eternity, and when I unmount the device, I just see that the files weren't copied to the stick. Did it 3 or 4 times in a row to make sure the issue could be reproduced. Took around 20-25mins to write 200MB over a USB2.0 connection, and at the end the files weren't there after unmounting. Went to Windoze and copied the very same files to the very same device and all was fine.
Copying to or from a pendrive or usb harddrive never gave me any problems.
One would say "your mobile phone is defective"... if I couldn't use it, read and write from another OS, I could consider. This, however, didn't happen in Dapper, I'm pretty sure.
