Just switch to a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1..6), log in, and put that in.
    ---Hi again,
I redid Envy and set NVIDIA drivers. Rebooted: got DOS text, then the glowing Kubuntu w/ blue bar. Afterwards a black screen (w/o pointer), monitor light blinked on/off indicating no signal ? I tried to type (Ctrl+Alt+F1..6) but could not get the prompt. Hard restart, and again back to 1024x768.

Will the command above give me any helpfull info now that I am in a different setting, or is that an error log ?

No, I think it gets emptied whenever the X server starts (sucessfully). It might be daily or something, though.
What you can do, though, is boot into "recovery mode" and execute that, or get a bad session and then boot into a LiveCD and work from there.
      For external use only.

---OK, I got the error message information. I think it means the driver is accepted but the dimension of my monitor is not divisible by one of its presets ? Does this mean I need to edit the list somehow ? I will try looking up error message in forum & google.

EDIT: I am going to remove Feisty 7.04 and go back to Dapper 6.06. Maybe Dapper will work better with my video card / monitor combo

Still hoping someone can recommend an Nvidia card (50.00-75.00 USD) that works with 1440x900.

Hey I read all your post on this thread, I have a few questions. Do you have a integrated graphics card on your motherboard? Also I am almost positive that this card can do the 1440x900 screen resolution. And please post your latest xorg.conf file, and the output of "lspci". I would not try switching to Dapper 6.06, I think we can get it working. Also the "Nvidia Geforce4 MX 420" will do this screen mode (but it take some work to get it all going) and it's not a very good card by a loooong shot, but it can run "OpenArena", "cube", "Supertuxkart", "torcs", "trigger", and quite a few other 3D games, it can also handle "beryl" but not very well.

          C@RL

Oh and just about any new Nivdia graphics card works with 1440x900 (and quite a few old one's).

---Motherboard is old, no built-in audio/video. (ALI Aladdin V: it has serial ports ! ) I will spend Labor Day removing Dapper 6 and re-installing Feisty 7. I installed it to give it a try with the drivers, no luck.

Can you let me know how to get the "lspci" ? I will post it & xorg.conf file as soon as I have Feisty loaded and I re-installed Envy & required dependencies.

Will try the RIVA TNT2 again, meanwhile I will see if I can get a newer video card. I'll ask my friends and see if they don't have a spare NVIDIA card newer than the TNT2. I don't need it to do gaming, only decent enough for video. (MPEG, DVDs, DivX)

            thanks for the response

Just type in "lspci" in the Terminal program, and post the out put here, then we will know the exact card you have and we can find the right driver for it, (sometimes "Envy" doesn't work will older cards).

I also found this on the ubuntu forums, maybe this can help me. I just don't know how & where to add monitor specs to xorg file.

Hope some of this info make sense. Thanks

Re: 1920x1080 (Full HD) - problem getting X showing this resolution

Ok you need to download this driver http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...-7184-pkg1.run
just put it in your home folder (example ¨/home/yourusername/¨) then restart your computer and boot into ¨recovery mode¨ then execute this ¨sh /home/yourusername/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7184-pkg1.run¨ it will probably ask you some stuff, but just answer it all so that it installs it, if it comes up with an error just post it here.
Once it´s installed, type this in ¨nano -w /etc/X11/xorg.conf" (the 11 is one´s, be sure to capitalize what I capitalized) arrow down to the part that looks like this
                  ¨Section "Module"
                  Load "i2c"
                  Load "bitmap"
                  Load "ddc"
                  Load "extmod"
                  Load "freetype"
                  Load "int10"
                  Load "vbe"
                  load "glx"
                  # load "GLcore"
                  load "v4l"
                  EndSection¨

make sure ¨load ¨glx¨¨ is in there, if not put it in!
and put a # in front of ¨load "GLcore"¨ (if it´s in there) and put a # in front of ¨load ¨dri¨¨ (if it´s there)

next arrow down to the section that looks something like this
                  ¨Section "Device"
                  identifier "nvidia"
                  boardname "nv"
                  busid "PCI:1:11:0"
                  driver "nvidia"
                  screen 0
                  Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
                  Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True"
                  EndSection¨

in your ¨driver" section replace what ever is there with ¨nvidia¨

the press ¨ctrl¨ and ¨x" at the same time, then click ¨y¨ (so it saves it)
if you do all that then run this command ¨startx" if it works and doesn´t pop up a error message then most likly every thing is working!!!! If not report errors here.
