Re: 1920x1080 (Full HD) - problem getting X showing this resolution

Well I'll give it a try, the only reason why I hesitate is because I think I've done that about 50 times!!!! I've installed it manualy, I've installed it with the package manager, I've installed it with "Envy", I've installed it with "Automatix", I've reconfigured my xorg.conf, I've manualy changed my xorg.conf, I've Unistalled it with "Envy", I've uninstalled it with "Automatix", I've uninstalled it with the package manager, I've reinstalled it manualy, I've reinstalled it with the package manager, I've reinstalled it with "Envy", I've reinstalled it with "Automatix", I've been Googling, I've been to forums, I've SEARCHED EVERY WHERE!!!!!!! Done almost everything! But I'll try it again.

    C@RL

Oh if I didn't tell you, I have got it into the correct screen mode (1440x900) with the "vesa" driver, but never with the "nvidia" driver.

      Interesting.

Well, I don't have experience with that particular card. I've seen posts concerning a "no_agp" line in Xorg.conf for some certain Nvidia cards -- but I would not think you should do that if you actually have an AGP card. But the nvidia-settings utility should work, if the driver is installed correctly -- that's real mystifying.

Try the "totally text mode" Envy install -- I don't have high hopes, either, but it seems worth the shot.

Well I tried it and it didn't do a darn thing, every things still the same, and the "nvidia-setting" still has those errors when I run it. But I am going to try uninstalling "Automatix" and "Easy ubuntu" and I'll try reinstalling "Envy" and then installing the driver.

Well I uninstalled the driver, nvidia-kernel, and all that stuff, and then reinstalled "envy" and then installed the driver, and it's ALL the SAME like I didn't do any thing. So any more advice?

          C@RL

          Oh I'll try reconfiguring "xorg.conf".

            Hey dibl,

I was able to load all the packages together and rebooted. I ran Envy but it gave me the black screen again. I am back on the VESA drivers w/ 1024x768. Any other ideas ?

Is my 32MB TNT2 card too old, any cheap (under $75USD) NVIDIA card that works automatically on Feisty ?

@Carlinuxlearner -- that sucks. Yes, you are right to clean out Automatix and maybe you will need to patch up your sources.list file, if there are undesired modifications in it.

A review of the Nvidia drivers supported products list for the latest 100.14.11 driver (installed by Envy) suggests to me that your GeForce2 GTS is NOT supported. So much for my "quick and dirty" fix -- sorry about that. I found your chip listed in the supported products list in Appendix 2 here
And, unfortunately, I cannot testify as to whether your 1440x900 mode is provided by the legacy 7185 driver or not. Only an experiment could prove that, unless you can google around and find some testimony elsewhere. So, assuming the driver provides that mode, this means if you want that mode on your card with the full capabilities of your chip, you will have to download and install the ver. 7185 proprietary driver. Save your downloaded Nvidia driver file somewhere safe, and make notes for yourself if you do that, because a Linux kernel upgrade will break the installation, and you'll have to re-install.

Here's a tip: If following the Nvidia "generic Linux" instructions lead you to failure, try following the excellent instructions here Follow "Method 1" (I'm deliberately pointing you to the Edgy version of the instructions, as that's the last one referring to earlier driver versions).

              @natgab -- I got all excited when I found this one for $39.00: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121080

But a review of Nvidia's Linux drivers and their supported products indicates NONE of their Linux drivers support it. So DON'T BUY THIS ONE! :P

I'd scrape up the extra $10.00 and buy this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130062

You'll have to install the proprietary driver to get the full benefit -- use Envy, like Carlinuxlearner tried to.

EDIT: @natgab, it says in the Adept package description that the nvidia-glx-legacy package will run your TNT2 AGP card, but you have to run the command
              Code:
              sudo nvidia-glx-config
enable to enable it after you install the package.

---Wow, this is better than what I have on my Mac G5. I only have a 128MB ATI on the Mac. My Linux box has a 2X AGP connector on an AMD K6 motherboard.

@natgab, if your motherboard requires an AGP video card, you can forget about the GeF 7600 -- it is PCI 16x. New AGP cards are getting scarce .... I'm not sure where to point you for that. :P

Re: 1920x1080 (Full HD) - problem getting X showing this resolution

Well I now have it at the maximum resolution "1440x900", AND it's EVEN using the "nvidia" driver (according to "xorg.conf), BUT (of corse) "PW: GLX extension not available on display ':0.0'?!?carl@carlinux1ghz:~$" so it's not using "GLX" which I NEED to run Blender (3D modeling/animation program, if your interested here's a link http://www.blender.org). And here's how I got it to do that, in "System settings" under "Monitor & Display" under "Hardware" I changed it to say that I had a flatpannel widescreen monitor with a resolution of 1440x900, then after appying I went and edited my xorg.conf file (because when you change those setting it changes the driver back to "nv") and changed it back to "nvidia" and deleted the higher screen modes that it could not do (it had 1920x1080 in there!!). Then I restarted my computer (every time I run "telinit 1" or the other command, all it does is put me back at the loading logo and then it just has a blinking cursor, and all you can do is hit enter). And now I have my resolution but NOT my GLX. So I guess the driver DOES support that screen mode (I think) but mabe just not with 3D support? Any Idea's?

                    C@RL

Oh I am going to try installing those drivers again (the manual way, Download, run in (recovery mode)).

Now, make a backup of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file for safe keeping. Copy it to say, /etc/X11/xorg.conf_WORKING. Then for you own benefit, make a log of what you had to do to get it all working. Both actions are going to be VERY beneficial to you.

Congrats on working it all out! 8)

I did find this GeForce FX 5500 128MB (4x/8x) - $47.99USD at newegg.com: (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130207), but I don't know if a newer card would help in getting my widescreen to work properly. Anyone using one of these or a GeForce FX 5200 on a widescreen ?

I also did a clean OS install. I then re-installed Envy, the program showed that all the files, dependencies were installed. After restart, all I got was a black screen with the mouse pointer showing. Tried a second restart, but nothing.
