Re: Just switched to Kubuntu from Sabayon and having some problems....

You have the identical audio chip that I have in my laptop.

Your KInfoCenter information also mirrors mine in all but three items:

    1) The Card config: address and irq are different, but that isn't an issue.

    2) Audio devices:
    0: ALC861VD Analog (DUPLEX) ## Yours
0: CONEXANT Analog (DUPLEX) ## Mine

    3) Mixers:
    0: Realtek ALC861-VD ## Yours
    0: Conexant CX20549 (Venice) ## Mine

I'm checking my system, as I KNOW that I've seen where you can select the Audio and Mixer devices to be used.

With the exact same audio chip (and, by the way, the very same video chip), the acpi=off added to the kernel line IS what gave me working sound.

In your laptops BIOS, do you have a power management setting that can be controlled?

not sure...never really liked going into the BIOS so I've always tried to stay away from it

Well, there's a first time for every thing.

Getting into the BIOS isn't a big deal. You always have the option to restart without saving your changes, so you don't have to worry about messing anything up.

When you have the chance, when you reboot, get into the BIOS and look around. See if yours has a power management setting. Don't change anything, just look and see. The reason to check, is that on (some) laptops running some versions of Linux, APM (Advanced Power Management) seems to create problems with sound.

just went into the BIOS and didn't see anything having to do with power management

Okay. Even eliminating something is progress. That narrows the scope of the problem.

I haven't found were to opt for the Audio and Mixer devices to be used, yet. If you have not yet done so, start doing searches in this forum on 'sound not working' - you will find LOTS of posts. Start looking through them. It's the long way to solve a problem, but you would be suprised! That is in fact, what I did to ultimately find a solution to my sound problem.

Is the thing that you are looking for located in:

System Settings, Sound System and then under the hardware tab?

No. But, while you are there, what do you have identified under Select the audio device: I have Autodect.

same, nothing else is selected ie. full duplex or anything like that.

the only other spot that has something in it is the "Select the MIDI device: Midi Through Midi Through Port-0 ALSA device"

Ditto for me. Sounds (no pun intended) like you and I have very similar systems, hardware wise.

Have you played around with KMixer at all? Verify that you don't have any of it's settings set to mute.
