    Kubuntu Feisty and USB SimpleTech external hard drive..

    I have a USB 2.0 SimpleTech 250gb external hard drive I just bought, but it willl not recognize on my Kubuntu Feisty 7.04 OS! My camera auto-recognizes on it though. When I plug it in nothing happens. When I plug it in to WinXP Pro it recognizes and mounts. How can I get my Kubuntu to mount it? Thanks everybody!

    Well, now I know the problem is bigger. My camera won't mount now. So how do I fix this problem with hardware not auto-recognizing and mounting? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

      Let's start with the USB drive. You say Win XP recognizes it. With it connected and running in Win XP, can you right click on the drive, choose "properties", and tell what the file format is?

            Thank you for the help but I have an issue yet again.

            mount: special device /dev/sdc1 does not exist

            I plugged in my camera to see which dev it was on then plugged in the drive to the same port. I know it's /dev/sdc1 for sure. I then continue to investigate it by running kInfoCenter and it does not recognize that the USB drive to be present. What should I do? Thanks!

              Re: Kubuntu Feisty and USB SimpleTech external hard drive..

              I think you may not understand that a particular USB connector on your PC is not a "fixed" device in the Linux system. USB devices are "dynamically assigned" -- that's part of what makes it so devilish to work with them.

              So, when your camera is plugged in, it may be /dev/sdc1. And when your USB drive is plugged in, it may be /dev/sdc1. Or it may be /dev/sdd1. You can't rely on the ID of the camera to be the same as the ID for the disk drive, even when the same USB connector is used. :P

                What's a way to find out which it is on?

                BTW: I tried plugging it into my hub and into another port and still nothing.. Finally I tried the last port and kInfoCenter recognized it. Dunno which dev it is though.

                  Here's what I would do. Reboot Kubuntu, with the camera plugged in. Let the OS come up and then check your /etc/fstab file. It should show the device assignment.

                    Re: Kubuntu Feisty and USB SimpleTech external hard drive..

                    I hope all this helps other users later on. Ok, I got it recognized by using another port. Then I got it to read with;

                    sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/sdc1 /media/SimpleTech/

                    But when I;

                    sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 /media/SimpleTech/

                    I got this;

                    $LogFile indicates unclean shutdown (0, 1)
                    Failed to mount '/dev/sdc1': Operation not supported
                    Mount is denied because NTFS logfile is unclean. Choose one action:
                    Boot Windows and shutdown it cleanly, or if you have a removable
                    device then click the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the Windows
                    taskbar notification area before disconnecting it.
                    Or
                    Run ntfsfix version 1.13.1 on Linux unless you have Vista.
                    Or
                    Mount the NTFS volume with the 'ro' option in read-only mode.

                    So now, I am formatting the drive through WinXP as NTFS and will then power off the drive hoping that now I will have the right files and be able to mount it with ntfs-3g. Sound right, or am I missing something important? Thank you again for all your help tonight. I couldn't have gotten this far without the help. So Thanks!

                      Sounds right Joe.

                      You need to understand that NTFS, like ext3 and reiserfs, is a journalling file system -- it runs a "realtime" log on transactions, and uses that log to fix itself in the event of a power outage or crash. For that reason, you cannot just yank it out of the USB connector, in Windows or in Linux -- you need to use the "Safely Remove" or "Eject" or "Unmount" capability in either OS, to avoid screwing up the files on the drive. So the error message you got says "I got yanked out before recording all pending transactions". So you will fix it by reformatting in Windows. Then follow the procedure in my other post to use it in Linux, and it will work just fine.

                        Worked like a charm! Thank you! I found the dev name, formatted the drive, did a safe disconnect, then used your tutorial and it all runs on windows and linux boxes all the same. Thank you again for all your help.

                          ... And when you got tired of chasing your usb devices, you might want to tack them by following this procedure 8)

                            I lost my drive when formating from NTFS to ext3 (since it did not finish the process). Now it wont be recogniced by either OS.
                            How can I get on any OS, the get it recognized by a parting software and reformating again.
                            Now I know I can use NTFS on kubu, so I might go this route, I believe easier for what I am trying to do; XBOX Server.

                              Mmm... I'm sure it's possible, but waaaay beyond your capabilities.

                              The usual choice for a "readable by everything" is FAT32. Linux can now read and write to NTFS just fine, so a lot of people choose that. I suggest you choose FAT32, though, because I don't know how the Xbox handles NTFS.
                              For external use only.
