7600 gt installation problems

    7600 gt installation problems

    Ok I just purchased this card but when I do the usual install linux restricted modules for my kernel then nvidia glx(tryed new too) then edit my xorg.conf from nv to nvidia when I reboot it just hangs. To get it back up I just reload my backup.

    I tryed installing the drivers from nvidia website which I would rather not do anyways due to updating would be a pain however it says I need libc and I just stopped after that. Here is a copy of my xorg file right now.

    Thank you for any help you may have.

    One more question if you know the cd that came with my new asus motherboard has some linux drivers for various things on my mobo do I need this? It has folders for different chipsets not sure what mine is I checked the box and everything nothing matched.

    Re: 7600 gt installation problems

    I think there are 2 ways that should work:

    1. Install the package
    Code:
    nvidia-glx-new
    and then in a console run
    Code:
    sudo nvidia-xconfig
    and then in a console run
    Code:
    sudo nvidia-settings
    and use that to set your resolution and refresh rates, and save that to your xorg.conf file.

    Or else

    2. Download the Envy script installer and run it, and then you will still need to open a console and run the
    Code:
    sudo nvidia-settings
    utility to set your defaults. Envy can be downloaded from here: http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html You want to download the file "envy_0.9.5-0ubuntu5_all.deb" which is halfway down the page.

      I didn't try envy just followed your instructions but no luck here is the xorg log

              The final problem appears to have been the old Cyrillic fonts issue, but I did not know that could break your xserver. If you search on that, you will find that there is a bad path to the Cyrillic fonts that you need to fix in xorg.conf.

                    well i have tryed envy complete removal and uninstall then install same problem,
                    install nvidia drivers from nvidia's website, tryed glx-new, glx, glx-legacy, 16 and 15 kernals, many configuartions of apt's with no luck. i have found it easier to just work on things from a konsole and doing startx. the fact is it will not boot with nvidia instead of nv no matter what i do. i fear that i am back to windows vista and hating life on my new computer haha. i did try the recommendations you guys have given me with no luck. someone please oh please oh pleeeeeeeaaase help me i hate windows.

                    new info that may help is i have the generic kernel which is showing 686 smp from uname i have tryed pretty much every restricted module just because with it. i am guessing it would work fine with a 386 kernel but that would not be good as i have dual core.

                      after resetting my xorg to nv instead of nvidia and booting that would produce a new xorg.0.log i believe so maybe i should have posted the xorg 0 old file. well here it is just the end so this doesn't get too spammed up if you need more let me know

                        ok i figured it out sorta i am using a dvi monitor when i use the vga the display works fine. so the nvidia drivers are switching my monitor at loadup ill poke around and try to figure out how to edit the xorg.

                          Here's a tip: for really long things like that, either attach it or use a Pastebin service.

                          If the subject is the X log, the best way is to execute "grep WW /var/log/Xorg.0.log && grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log" and post the output of that. It only shows the more important stuff.
