    modem problem

Hi guys, can anyone help me get a driver for my winmodem. i have the following problem with my old winmodem:

"As it was the case with Kubuntu 6.06, Kubuntu 7.04 did not detect my modem. I do understand that most winmodems are not supported by Kubuntu by default and that I have to look for drivers that will enable the use of such modems but despite my efforts I could not find one for my modem (on this site https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SettingUpModems). So unfortunately i cannot connect to the internet."

I'll list some fact that might be relevant to the problem:

    System Manufacturer VIA Technologies, Inc.
    System Model VT82C693ABX

BIOS Version/Date Award Software International, Inc. 4.51 PG, 27/07/2000
    SMBIOS Version 2.3
    Total Physical Memory 320.00 MB

    Modem
    Name Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem
Description Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem(internal PCI modem)
    Device Type Internal Modem
    Attached To COM3
    Answer Mode Not Available
    Provider Name Motorola Inc
Responses Key Name Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem::Motorola
    Memory Address 0xE6800000-0xE68000FF
    IRQ Channel IRQ 12

    Display
    Name SiS 6326
Adapter Type SiS 6326, SiS 6326 compatible
    Adapter Description SiS 6326
Adapter RAM 8.00 MB (8,388,608 bytes)

Is there anything I can do to solve my modem problem?
    Please help me.
    Thanks a lot

    Re: modem problem

The SM56 used to work just fine with linmodem drivers back in 2000 or 2001, I've used them with no problem in these years. I think a Lucent 56k also worked with the mentioned drivers.

      Re: modem problem

Well, searching Google for "motorola sm56 driver linux", it would appear that Motorola releases Linux drivers.

No, looks like they don't any more. Trying any of several links sends to you a page describing input of Chinese characters.
Additionally, once I found the drivers page, only Windows drivers were listed.

Following a few links, I get to modemsite.com, which almost offers drivers, but the site itself is very badly done and doesn't help.

Few more links later, we get to driverguide.com. Very useful site. Finally found a download link.
Here it is--but it says it requires a 2.4 kernel. Hmm.
Try it anyway. If it works, great, if not, you're out of luck and that modem's not going anywhere.
      For external use only.

        Re: modem problem

Here is something for kernel 2.6, but you may have to try using alien to convert from rpm http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/
