    Turn off problem

    Hello!

I am Linux newbie. After many years of using Windows made right decision and install Kubuntu 7.04 on my HP 500 notebook.
First of all tochpad not woks and resolution was 1024x768 instead of 1280x800.
I have solved this problem with installing new kernel and drivers.

And there is a problem, that too hard to solve for me...

When I try to turn off notebook (from K menu), it freezes with dark screen.
But when I run "sudo shutdown -h now"notebook turns off correctly. And if I turn off notebook from logging screen, it so turn off correctly.

Please, help. How can I solve this problem?

    Re: Turn off problem

You are not the only one to have this problem. Right now I read at least 3 different users having the same issue turning the comp off with the K menu. Since it's not an isolated problem, from what I've read, I'm out of useful ideas. Did you read something at Ubuntu forums, if people using Gnome have the same problem?

      Re: Turn off problem

I have asked about it on Russian Ubuntu forum, one have same problem with Ubuntu 6.06.
Another man solved thit problem by adding acpi=force pci=noacpi parameters to /boot/grub/menu.lst on ThinkPad 600e.
And one had same problem with compiz, he solved by turning off 3d desktop effects...

PS: I have looked in kcontrol, poweroff command looks like /something.../poweroff
Is there possible to replace it with shutdown -h now without asking root password?

Is ACPI on or off in your BIOS settings? Try changing the current value and see how it goes. Did you try these parameters in your boot?

          Re: Turn off problem

There is no ACPI settings on BIOS setup.
Can I turn it on or off with some Linux utility?

            Re: Turn off problem

How come? Any modern computer has the ACPI enable/disable option in BIOS, take a look at your motherboard manual, it must be there.
If it is turned off in BIOS, there is no way to enable it in software, but if it's turned on in BIOS, you may set the OS to either use it or not.
To test these boot parameters, we need to know if you have ACPI enabled, and it is really the cause of the problem.

Of course, many modern computer have ACPI option in BIOS. But mine is notebook, and as you know, notebooks have very few options in BIOS. You may check it in service manual for my notebook (3 Mb, PDF: http://search.hp.com/redirect.html?t...002_USEN&pos=5
              )

Sorry, I forgot you are running on a notebook, then it is probably enabled, specially if the CPU frequency is scaled on-the-fly.
I read somewhere it is a known bug in KDE, but I also read that Gnome users are having it, so what is left to think of now? Kernel? Missing package (unlikely)?
By installing Feisty, you have at least 2 kernels available. Are you trying with only 1? The packages "suspend" and "hibernate" are only for, well, you guessed. I don't believe they have an impact on this. Since you can shutdown with sudo, but not with your regular user, the permissions may be bogus. "Where", "what"?
Is this with a 3D desktop, or plain Xorg+KDE?

                  Re: Turn off problem

One oft-suggested fix is to add "TerminateServer=true" to /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc under the section [X-:*-Core].
Only one person got this to work for them, though.

                    Re: Turn off problem

                    I am using plain XORG+KDE.
I have this problem with kernel 2.6.20-16 and 2.6.20-15 too.

"TerminateServer=true" is already in my /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc

I changed in Kcontrol/system/logon manager/turn off (I am not sure that names is correct, i use Russian language) turn off command /sbin/poweroff to /sbin/shutdown and it gave no result....

Hm. Let's check something. Get to the black screen and switch to a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1...). Log in and execute "ps -e | grep dcop". Do you see one (or more) of "dcopserver_shut"?

Do you mean black screen, that appears after clicking on shutdown from K menu? Computer freezes and gave no reaction on keys...

                          Re: Turn off problem

I have Kubuntu 7.04 installed on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite P105). I was having shutdown problems too, but a post with this suggestion made the process 'work' in my case. I stil end up with the system 'halted', but all process are shutdown and I just have to power off the laptop.

From the K menu, select shut down. From the next screen, select log off. When you are presented with the logon prompt, click the 'document' to the left and select shut down. (I may be off on the option names - I'm at work). This causes the desktop (and X Windows) to stop/shutdown all of its services/applications. This seems to be important in order to avoid problems in getting a clean shutdown to work. At least, that has been my experience, and as I stated, the suggestion came from another post concerning shutdown issues.

Following this procedure, I alwasy get a clean shutdown or restart.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

                            That's... unusual.

I suspect something you have running is doing it, perhaps by causing a system freeze when it exits.

If I turn off notebook from logon screen, it turns off normally.
How can I recognise process, that freezes computer?
