    Twinview problem

    Hi

Hope someone can help me cos I'm pulling my hair out here, and it's probably just something I'm missing

I've just installed Feisty yesterday, after months of success with Edgy. I had Twinview working under Edgy no problems, but just can't get it working with Feisty at all.

I've tried various methods found on Google, used the NVidia GUI tool, edited xorg.conf by hand, and all for nothing.

When X is restarted, it just hangs there, black screen, cursor blinking happily away in the top-left, doing absolutely nothing

I'm running an NVidia GeForce FX card with 2 outputs, and 2 identical Dell 1704FPT monitors. However, I'm loath to edit anything too drastically in xorg.conf, cos there's a ton of stuff in there relating to the monitor.

    Code:
    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
    # nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder3) Mon Feb 26 23:38:46 PST 2007

    # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf(5) manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Anyone got any ideas, or should I just give up and switch to Debian Etch

How about "Screen" instead of "screen"?

      EDIT:
just noticed the swiss penguin was faster, but i'll post anyway...
      hopefully this will also help...
      ---

      it should be easy enough.
though, it appears you're using the open source "nv" (open) driver...
i recently experimented a bit with twinview/cloning/... with the "nvidia" (proprietary) driver.
      my suggestion:
      a) backup your current /etc/X11/xorg.conf
      b) install the nvidia-glx driver (there's 3 of them) from the restricted modules
      c) run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and pick the "nvidia" driver then restart X
      d) run "glxgears --info" to make sure all is ok
      e) run the nvidia setup tool
      f) edit xorg.conf to fix your keyboard variant (i had to do this).
      that's it.
      you should be alright.
      gnu/linux is not windoze
