You don't happen to have a Dell computer do you?
I know that dells have sound blaster and they never work with linux, from my own experience they change the soundblaster to only work with windows..
I have 2 dells and neither will work with Linux, so i purchased an external sound blaster and it works just fine..
    Good luck

Nope. This is a homemade box (eg. selected the pieces at the store and assembled it myself).

Perhaps you need to disable the on-board soundcard in the bios?
