How to change the default audio device in Kubuntu

I just got a usb sound card [it looks like a jump drive] an in Gizmo and Skype I can change to the usb device but how can I make the usb sound card work system wide? XMMX, mplayer etc. Also I've yet to get the mic to work in Skype [I did unmute the mike in kmix] any ideas? I use Feisty and the onboard sound is VIA. Thanks guys
    Thanks
